Chapter 6 - The Split of the Thieves

The trial hadn't even begun, but the marriage between Kyle and Vanessa dissolved within a week of their arrest. Facing decades behind bars, their mutual greed turned into a desperate race to betray each other to the prosecutors.
Vanessa’s high-priced attorney—paid for by her wealthy parents who refused to bail her out—offered a plea deal.
"My client will testify fully against Kyle Cole," the lawyer told the district attorney during a recorded deposition that Daniel and I watched from behind a one-way mirror. "She will prove that Kyle was the mastermind who orchestrated the theft of his mother's medical records and forced her to sign the power of attorney forms while she was sedated."
In the adjacent room, Kyle’s public defender was making the exact same pitch. "Kyle has digital recordings of Vanessa admitting she found the crooked notary. He was under emotional duress from his wife’s constant demands for a luxury lifestyle."

Daniel leaned back in his chair, watching the monitors with a look of pure professional satisfaction. "Look at them. Like rats in a flooding basement, eating each other just to survive another hour. They don't even realize that their mutual confessions mean the prosecution doesn't even need to go to trial. They’ve both pleaded guilty to felony charges without us even opening a single witness file."
"They deserve every single second they get," I said, thinking of the dark circles under my mother's eyes when we found her. "They thought they were smarter than everyone else. Now they're just statistics."
