Chapter 7 - The Homecoming

The morning sun broke through the clouds, painting the front yard of my mother's beautiful suburban home in a bright, golden light. The "For Sale" sign that Kyle had illegally erected had been torn down and thrown into the trash.
I held my mother's arm as she walked up the stone pathway to her front porch. She stopped at the door, her hands shaking as she pulled her original brass key from her pocket. She slipped it into the lock, turned it, and the heavy oak door swung open to reveal her beautiful, familiar living room exactly as she had left it before her surgery.
"I'm home," she whispered, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. "I'm actually home."
Daniel carried her small suitcase inside, while several neighbors ran across the lawns, holding casseroles and flowers, gasping in relief to see her back where she belonged. They had been told by Kyle that she had moved to an upscale retirement community in another state.
"Evelyn! Oh my god, we were so worried!" Mrs. Higgins, her next-door neighbor, cried, hugging her tight. "Kyle told us you sold the house because you wanted to travel! We had no idea!"

"My daughter saved me," Mom said, looking back at me with a look of profound love and pride that I will never forget. "My daughter and her husband brought me back from the dark."
As the neighbors gathered around her, filling the house with warmth and laughter once again, I stood by the window with Daniel, watching her smile for the first time in months. The house was safe, her name was cleared, and the monsters who tried to erase her were locked away where they could never hurt her again.
