Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Cell

The county jail smelled of bleach and old iron. I stood behind the double-paned glass of the interrogation room, holding Daniel’s hand as we looked down at Kyle. He sat in an orange jumpsuit, his head buried in his hands, completely stripped of his former arrogance.
The guard buzzed us in. Kyle looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Claire... please. You have to talk to Daniel. Tell him to drop the federal charges. They're talking about ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary! I’m your brother!"
"You stopped being my brother the second you left our mother to freeze to death under a bridge, Kyle," I said, my voice completely devoid of pity. "While you were drinking champagne bought with her stolen money, she was sleeping on wet newspapers. Did you ever stop to think if she would survive the night?"
"It was Vanessa’s idea!" Kyle begged, pointing frantically at the wall separating his cell from his wife’s. "She said Mom would be fine in a state facility! She said we needed the money for our business! I didn't know Vanessa paid a fake notary!"
"You signed the document, Kyle," Daniel interjected, his voice slicing through Kyle’s excuses like a scalpel. "You accepted the wire transfers. You lied to Claire every night on the phone telling her Mom was resting when you had actually thrown her out onto the street. In the eyes of the law, you are just as guilty as your wife. And the federal government doesn't bargain with elder abusers."

Kyle fell back into his chair, a broken shell of a man. "What about the house?"
"The sale is completely canceled," I said. "Mom is going home tomorrow. And you are going to prison."
