Chapter 8 - The Weight of Justice

Two months later, the final sentencing hearing was held at the federal courthouse. The courtroom was silent as the judge, a stern woman with decades of experience, reviewed the financial forensic binders that Daniel’s team had prepared.

Kyle and Vanessa stood side by side, dressed in matching prison jumpsuits, separated by two burly guards. They didn't even look at each other. The glamour, the champagne, and the designer clothes were completely gone, replaced by the grim reality of federal justice.

"Kyle Cole and Vanessa Cole," the judge began, her voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. "The court has reviewed your desperate attempts to blame each other for this crime. But the numbers do not lie. This was a calculated, cruel, and systematic attempt to destroy a vulnerable woman’s life for the sake of material greed. You left your own mother, Kyle, in a rainstorm to die so you could buy a luxury watch."

The judge slammed her gavel down with a sound like a gunshot.

"Vanessa Cole, you are sentenced to eight years in a federal penitentiary with no possibility of early parole. Kyle Cole, for the violation of familial trust and criminal exploitation, you are sentenced to twelve years. Furthermore, all your remaining assets are hereby seized for permanent criminal restitution to the victim."

Vanessa burst into hysterical sobs as she was led away through the side door. Kyle looked back at our mother one last time, his lips moving in a silent, pathetic plea. But my mother simply closed her eyes, turning her head away, choosing to focus on the future instead of his hollow regrets.
