Chapter 15 - Echoes in the Dark

The helicopter swept over the rugged, sun-drenched cliffs of northwestern Sicily as the morning sun rose over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Below, the ancient stone courtyard of the Romano family’s ancestral villa was scorched with black burn marks, surrounded by shattered glass and damaged vehicles.
Sophia and Julian touched down on the private helipad, surrounded by a squad of fully armed, highly trained security operatives. Sophia stepped out into the swirling dust, her green dress replaced by tactical black apparel, her hair pulled back into a tight braid.
She sprinted into the villa's ruined central hall. The air reeked of smoke and cordite.
"Father!" Sophia called out, her voice echoing through the vaulted stone arches.
Near the central fountain, two wounded Romano bodyguards were being treated by medics. In the middle of the room sat Don Vincenzo. He was splattered with soot, his left arm wrapped in a blood-stained bandage, but he held a heavy pistol resting on his knee, his eyes blazing with furious vitality.
"Sophia," Vincenzo said, letting out a breath of relief as she rushed to his side, kneeling to embrace him. "I told you not to come."
"I don't leave my family behind," Sophia said fiercely, checking his wounds. "Where is Marcus?"
"He wasn't here in person," Vincenzo replied, his voice raspy. "It was a mercenary strike unit. But they left a recording for you."
Julian walked over, holding a rugged military tablet retrieved from the courtyard. He tapped the screen, and a grainy video played.
A tall, sharp-featured man with icy blue eyes and graying hair appeared on the screen—Marcus Vane. He was sitting in a dimly lit, damp stone cellar that looked terrifyingly familiar to Sophia. High arched brick walls, rusty iron chains hanging from the ceiling, and a single, heavy wooden door.
It was the exact subterranean vault where Sophia had been imprisoned ten years ago under the old Sterling estate.
"Hello, Sophia," Marcus’s voice smooth and dripping with malice filled the room through the speaker. "You built a beautiful dream, didn't you? A handsome husband, a precious daughter, an empire of luxury. But dreams are fragile things."
Marcus leaned closer to the camera. "You reclaimed your life ten years ago, but you left the foundation intact. I am holding the original deeds of the Sterling-Romano alliance. In forty-eight hours, I will publish documents that will liquidate your entire fashion house, label your husband a war criminal, and throw your family into absolute financial ruin. If you want to stop me, come back to where your nightmare began."
The video cut to black.
Sophia stood up slowly. Her hands were motionless. The phantom ache in her leg returned, but inside her chest, a cold, blazing flame consumed every remnant of fear.
"He wants to drag me back to the dark," Sophia whispered.

"We go in together, with full tactical support," Julian said, his hand gripping her shoulder with unshakeable strength. "We level that place to the ground."
"No," Sophia said, looking at Julian. "He expects an army. If he sees tactical units, he will release those forged documents and burn everything we’ve built. I will face him. But you will be my shadow."
