Chapter 16 - The Fall of Sterling Manor

The rain poured relentlessly over the overgrown estate in the English countryside. Sterling Manor, once a grand architectural masterpiece, stood like an ominous black leviathan against the storm-swept sky. Abandoned for years, its windows were shattered, its stone walls covered in dark ivy.

A black SUV pulled up to the rusted iron gates. Sophia stepped out into the downpour, holding an umbrella, her long black trench coat soaking up the rain. Behind her, hidden in the treeline, Julian and a elite squad of snipers took their positions in the shadows.

"I'm in position, Sophia," Julian's voice came through her tiny ear-piece. "Thermal optics show at least twelve armed mercenaries inside the main hall. Marcus is in the subterranean levels."

"Understood," Sophia replied softly. "Keep eyes on the exits. No one leaves alive tonight."

Sophia pushed open the heavy wooden doors of the manor. The interior smelled of damp earth, rot, and old wood. Floorboards creaked under her boots as she walked through the echoing entrance hall.

"Welcome home, Sophia," a voice echoed through the high ceilings via old intercom speakers. "Descending into the cellar, are we? Just like old times."

Sophia ignored the voice, walking with steady, majestic grace down the grand staircase toward the basement door. She pulled out a sleek silver flashlight, illuminating the dark stone steps leading down into the depths.

With every step down, memories flashed through her mind—the terrifying coldness, the sound of the heavy iron key turning in the lock, the days spent in total darkness believing no one was coming for her. But as her boot hit the final stone step of the subterranean dungeon, she felt no fear. Only absolute, sovereign authority.

She entered the central vault. Marcus Vane stood near an old wooden table, surrounded by three heavily armed men. On the table lay a leather-bound folder containing the forged documents designed to destroy her empire.

"You actually came alone," Marcus smiled, stepping into the circle of flashlight beam. "Arrogant to the end."

"I am not arrogant, Marcus," Sophia said, clicking off her flashlight as the overhead hanging bulb flickered to life. "I am simply tired of pests interfering with my life."

Marcus’s smile faded, replaced by an ugly scowl. "You think you are a queen? You were a broken girl crying on this dirt floor!"

"Ten years ago, yes," Sophia said softly, taking a step toward him. "But that girl died in this room. And the woman who walked out built a kingdom you could never dream of."

Marcus raised his hand, gesturing to his men. "Kill her. Make it look like an accident."

Before the guards could raise their rifles, the reinforced glass skylights at the top of the cellar shattered into a storm of glass and rain.
