Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Dark

Five years later.
At the Upstate Maximum Security Facility, the winter wind howled across the concrete yards.
Inmate #48291—Ethan Hayes—was on kitchen cleaning detail. His hands were raw, calloused, and red from scrubbing heavy metal pots in cold soapy water. His youth was gone, his hair greyed, his body thin and stooped.
In the prison break room, a small television mounted on the wall was playing the afternoon news.
Ethan stopped his scrubbing, wiping his brow with his stained sleeve, looking up at the screen.
On the screen was Sophia Romano.
She was standing on stage at the Lincoln Center in New York, accepting the prestigious Global Fashion Designer of the Year award. She looked breathtaking, wearing a custom emerald gown, surrounded by world leaders and fashion icons.
Beside her stood Julian Sterling, holding their three-year-old daughter, a little girl with bright brown eyes who was laughing and clapping for her mother.
Standing in the front row was Don Vincenzo Romano, smiling with immense pride, holding his silver cane.
The news anchor’s voice echoed through the cafeteria: "Sophia Romano’s fashion empire reaches a milestone five-billion-dollar valuation today, while her women's advocacy foundation expands into twelve international cities..."
Ethan stared at the screen, tears of pure, agonizing regret welling in his hollow eyes.
He remembered the basement door. He remembered the dark. He remembered telling her she was a nobody who lived off his generosity.
Now, she owned the world. And he was scrubbing pots in a grey cell, forgotten by history, erased from her life forever.

"Hey! Hayes!" a prison guard barked, kicking Ethan’s bucket over, spilling soapy water across the floor. "Stop staring at the TV and clean up this mess! You've got three more hours of shift!"
Ethan slowly dropped to his knees on the cold concrete floor, picking up the dirty rag, weeping silently as the television broadcasted the laughter of the woman he had tried to destroy.
