Chapter 12 - The Battle for Englewood

The mid-day rain slicked the glass facade of the newly built Englewood Community Health Center. Inside, the grand lobby was bustling with doctors, nurses, local community leaders, and journalists gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the center's pediatric emergency wing.
Hannah stood near the stage, dressed in an elegant navy blazer and trousers, her dark hair pinned back professionally. She was reviewing medical supply manifests with her head administrator when the glass doors at the main entrance swung open.
A entourage of men in sharp, charcoal-grey suits entered the lobby. At the center was Julian Rossi. He was thirty-five, tall, lean, with cold, calculating blue eyes and slicked-back dark hair. He wore a tailored Italian suit that oozed predatory wealth.
The room’s cheerful chatter faltered as several security guards moved toward the entourage. Marcus Vance, standing near the podium, immediately stepped forward, his eyes narrowed.
"Mr. Rossi," Marcus said coldly, stepping into Julian’s path. "This is a private medical facility. You are not on the guest list."
Julian gave a smooth, condescending smile, adjusting his silk tie. "It’s a public facility funded in part by state healthcare grants, Mr. Vance. As the newly appointed managing director of Vanguard Capital, which now holds a major stake in the municipal development bonds for Englewood, I am simply inspecting my investment."
Julian’s cold gaze swept over the state-of-the-art facility before landing directly on Hannah. He walked toward her with slow, deliberate steps, ignoring the tense security personnel surrounding him.
"Mrs. Moretti," Julian said, offering a polite, theatrical bow of his head. "Or should I call you Director Moretti? I must admit, I was skeptical when I read the press releases in Milan. A trauma nurse managing a hundred-million-dollar philanthropic network seemed... overly ambitious."
Hannah didn't flinch. She handed her clipboard to her nurse and stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Marcus, her presence radiating calm, absolute authority.
"Mr. Rossi," Hannah said, her voice clear and carrying effortlessly through the quiet hall. "A trauma nurse learns how to identify a deadly parasite within seconds of entering a room. So you’ll forgive me if I don't waste time on pleasantries."
Julian’s smooth smile twitched slightly at the edge. "A sharp tongue. Just like my late brother described. But passion doesn't pay for pediatric ventilators, Mrs. Moretti. Vanguard Capital filed an injunction with the Illinois Department of Public Health two hours ago. We’ve requested a complete freeze on state funding for this facility pending a forensic audit of the Moretti Trust’s original seed capital."
A ripple of quiet panic passed through the assembled press and community board members.
"You’re playing with children’s lives to settle an old family grudge," Hannah said, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet, lethal disdain. "You think you can come back to Chicago, throw around offshore hedge-fund money, and intimidate us?"
"I don't need to intimidate you, Hannah," Julian leaned in, his voice lowering so only she and Marcus could hear. "I’m going to strip Roman of his legitimate crown piece by piece. By the time I’m done, the Moretti name will be associated with financial fraud, and this precious clinic will be sold off to a private medical conglomerate for scraps."
"You forgot one thing, Julian," a deep, resonant voice boomed from the entrance.
The heavy glass doors parted again, and Roman walked in. He wore a dark charcoal suit, his broad shoulders easily dominating the room. Behind him stood two of his top legal advisors and the local Alderman representing the Englewood district.
Roman walked straight down the center aisle, his eyes locked onto Julian with an intensity that made the surrounding corporate aides involuntarily take a step back.
"Roman," Julian said, keeping his voice composed, though his hand subtly tightened against his silver wristwatch. "It’s been a long time."
"Not long enough," Roman replied, stopping inches from Julian. He stood taller, broader, and infinitely more formidable than the corporate executive before him. "You brought your circus to my wife’s clinic, Julian. That was your second mistake."
"And what was my first?" Julian smirked faintly.
"Thinking that Vanguard Capital owned twenty-two percent of Moretti Logistics," Roman said, pulling a leather folder from his inner pocket and handing it directly to the Alderman. "Marcus and my financial team spent the last twelve hours tracing your offshore funding through the Cayman shell companies. You used illegally leveraged bank lines from Zurich to buy those shares."
Julian’s face went stiff.
"As of eight o'clock this morning," Roman continued calmly, "the Federal Reserve frozen those leverage accounts on suspicion of international money laundering. Your shares in Moretti Logistics are officially impounded by the Department of Justice."
Gasps echoed through the room. The journalists scrambled, cameras flashing rapidly.
Julian’s cold composure cracked, a flash of pure, venomous rage breaking through his polished exterior. "This isn't over, Roman. You think you can hide behind legal technicalities forever?"
"I’m not hiding, Julian," Roman said, his dark eyes burning with absolute dominance. "I’m standing right here in the open sun. Now get out of my wife’s hospital before I have security throw you into the street."
Julian stared at Roman, then at Hannah, who stood beside her husband with an unyielding smile. Without another word, Julian turned on his heel and stormed out of the building, his entourage scrambling to follow.
The room erupted into applause. Roman turned to Hannah, taking her hands into his, his fierce expression softening instantly into admiration.

"Not a bad start to the morning, Director Moretti," Roman murmured with a low chuckle.
Hannah leaned up on her tiptoes, whispering into his ear, "That was just the opening move, Mr. Moretti. Now we go on the offensive."
