Chapter 20 - The Sanctuary of Light

Three years later. June.
The Chicago sun was bright, warm, and beautiful, casting golden light over the endless gardens of the Moretti estate. The soft summer breeze rolled off Lake Michigan, rustling the ancient pine trees and filling the air with the scent of blooming roses.
The lawn was a scene of pure, joyful celebration. A large marquee tent sat near the terrace, where friends, family, and colleagues gathered to celebrate Roman and Hannah’s fifteenth wedding anniversary.
Nineteen-year-old Owen, now a brilliant second-year law and public policy student at University of Chicago, was standing near the stone fountain, laughing and debating policy with Marcus Vance. Fifteen-year-old Clara, who had inherited her mother’s sharp mind and artistic grace, was sitting at an easel near the rose garden, capturing the afternoon light in vibrant oil paints.
On the wide stone terrace, a long wooden dining table was laden with Italian delicacies, summer fruits, and vintage wines from their Sicilian vineyard.
Hannah stood near the terrace railing, wearing a simple, elegant ivory sundress, her dark hair flowing softly in the breeze. She looked out over the gardens, her hand gently resting on the stone balustrade.
Strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind.
Roman pulled her flush against his chest, pressing a warm, lingering kiss against her temple before resting his chin on her shoulder. His hands covered hers, the black onyx ring warming against her skin in the summer sun.
He was completely relaxed, his broad frame radiating the quiet, supreme fulfillment of a man whose world was secure, whole, and blessed beyond measure.
"Owen just told me he wants to intern at the foundation’s legal division next summer," Roman whispered into her ear, his deep voice a soothing, familiar rhythm.
Hannah smiled, turning her head slightly to press her cheek against his. "He’s going to run the foundation one day, Roman. And Clara will probably run the city."
Roman laughed softly, a sound of pure contentment. "Let them conquer the world, my love. We gave them the foundation to stand on."
He turned her around in his arms so she was looking directly into his dark, soulful eyes. He reached up, his fingers gently tracing the contour of her cheek, looking at her with the same ferocious, breathtaking devotion that had only grown stronger with every passing year.
"They thought you were just a nurse who walked into my dark world," Roman murmured softly, his voice thick with emotion. "But you were the savior of my soul, Hannah. You healed my broken empire, and you built a kingdom of light."
Hannah looked into the eyes of the man who had fought the world to protect her, the man who had traded darkness for light, power for love, and fear for family.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a tender, passionate kiss that held all the memories of their past and all the promises of their future.

"And I'd do it all over again, Mr. Moretti," Hannah whispered against his lips, her heart full, as the bright summer sun bathed their sanctuary in golden light.
