Chapter 13 - Shadows on the Waterfront

While the public victory at Englewood temporarily crippled Julian’s corporate strategy, Roman knew better than to expect a quiet surrender from a Rossi.

Two days later, midnight descended over the Port of Chicago. A thick mist rolled off Lake Michigan, swallowing the towering shipping cranes and rows of steel cargo containers. The Moretti Logistics terminal was usually bustling with night shifts, but tonight, Section 4—the private automated container bay—was unusually quiet.

A black SUV sat idling in the shadows near Pier 17. Inside sat Roman and his chief of security, Dominic, a towering, scarred man who had served the Moretti family faithfully for fifteen years.

"Our port informants confirmed it an hour ago, Boss," Dominic said, adjusting the ear-piece of his radio. "Julian’s men paid off two junior dock supervisors on the night shift. They’re planning to plant five crates of undeclared automatic weapons inside a Moretti logistics container arriving from Rotterdam."

Roman watched the flickering lights of a cargo ship docking in the distance. "They want the Federal Customs agents to raid the terminal tomorrow morning. If weapons are found in a Moretti container, it triggers an immediate revocation of our international shipping license."

"We can have forty men down here in ten minutes and wipe them out," Dominic suggested, his hand resting on his sidearm.

"No," Roman said firmly. "We aren't doing this the old way, Dominic. If blood is spilled on these docks, the press will call it a mob war, and Hannah’s foundation will suffer the fallout. We catch them in the act, hand them over to the federal authorities on a silver platter, and let the law finish Julian."

Roman checked his watch. "Where is the federal strike team?"

"Marcus is with Homeland Security Special Agent Miller down at the perimeter gate," Dominic replied. "They’re waiting for our signal."

Suddenly, three dark figures slipped out from behind a row of shipping containers, pushing a heavy motorized pallet holding three large wooden crates wrapped in black industrial plastic. They moved stealthily toward Container #408—a Moretti-branded cold-storage unit scheduled for customs clearance at dawn.

Roman opened his car door, stepping out into the cool, damp night air. "Let’s go."

Moving like shadows, Roman and Dominic closed the distance. The intruders were so focused on cutting the forged seal on Container #408 that they didn't hear Roman’s dress shoes clicking against the wet asphalt until it was too late.

"Working late, boys?" Roman’s deep voice shattered the quiet.

The three men spun around in shock. One of them immediately reached inside his heavy jacket for a weapon, but Dominic moved with blinding speed, slamming the man against the steel container wall and disarming him in a single fluid motion.

The second man tried to bolt, but Roman stepped into his path, catching him by the collar and throwing him to the ground with effortless strength.

The third man—a senior dock worker named Peterson whom Roman had personally hired four years ago—froze, trembling as Roman turned his piercing gaze upon him.

"P-Mr. Moretti..." Peterson stammered, his knees shaking. "Please... they threatened my family... Julian’s men said they’d burn my house down if I didn't let them put the crates in the bay—"

"I gave you a job, Peterson," Roman said, his voice terrifying in its quiet intensity. "I paid for your daughter’s leukemia treatments through Hannah’s foundation. And you sold us out to a ghost?"

Peterson collapsed to his knees, sobbing. "I’m sorry... I’m so sorry..."

Before Roman could reply, red and blue flashing lights suddenly illuminated the dock. Four federal tactical vehicles sped around the corner, sirens blaring, sealing off the shipping lane. Dozens of armed federal agents spilled out, weapons drawn, led by Marcus Vance and Special Agent Miller.

"Federal agents! Don't move!" Miller shouted through a megawatt bullhorn.

Roman stepped back calmly, raising his hands slightly in a peaceful gesture as Agent Miller approached the open crates. Miller cut open the black plastic with a tactical knife, revealing row upon row of high-grade military rifles with altered serial numbers.

Agent Miller turned to Roman, his expression grim but respectful. "Your tip was dead accurate, Moretti. If these had been found tomorrow during routine inspection, your entire supply chain would have been seized."

"We keep our house clean, Agent Miller," Roman said coldly, looking down at Peterson. "This man has information regarding the men who paid him. Treat him fairly, but get Julian Rossi’s name on the record."

Miller nodded. "We’ll have an arrest warrant for Julian by morning."

Roman walked back toward his vehicle, pulling out his encrypted phone. He hit speed dial.

Hannah’s soft, warm voice answered on the first ring. "Roman? Is it done?"

"It’s done, love," Roman said, the coldness vanishing from his voice as he looked up at the foggy Chicago skyline. "The docks are secure. Federal warrants are being issued as we speak."

"Come home," Hannah whispered warmly over the line. "The kids are sleeping. I left a warm dinner on the stove."

"I’m on my way," Roman smiled, stepping into the SUV.

As they drove away from the docks, Roman felt a deep sense of satisfaction. The old ways of violence were gone; he was protecting his empire with intelligence, law, and the unbreakable partnership he shared with his wife.
