Chapter 15 - The Trap at the Drake

The Grand Ballroom of the historic Drake Hotel was a masterpiece of Crystal chandeliers, gilded pillars, and velvet drapes. Chicago’s highest society—politicians, business tycoons, philanthropists, and media moguls—gathered for the annual Moretti Health Foundation Gala.

Violin music drifted through the air as waiter served champagne. At the center of the room, Hannah looked stunning in a emerald-green silk gown, her hair styled in soft waves over her shoulders. Beside her, Roman was impeccably handsome in a black tuxedo, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back.

To the public eye, they were the picture of ultimate power and elegance. But beneath the surface, the room was a tightly wired fortress.

Undercover federal agents and Roman’s private security dressed as waiters and guests were posted at every exit, elevator, and service corridor. Marcus Vance stood near the balcony, monitoring encrypted radio chatter on his phone.

"Detroit team confirmed a success twenty minutes ago," Marcus whispered as he passed Roman. "Elena’s son has been rescued, safe and unharmed. The kidnappers are in federal custody."

Roman gave a tight nod. "Good. That means Julian has no leverage left."

At 9:30 PM, Hannah took the stage under the bright spotlights to deliver her keynote address. The crowd fell into a respectful silence as she stepped up to the microphone.

"Three years ago," Hannah began, her voice echoing clearly through the ballroom, "this city gave my family a second chance. We built the Moretti Health Foundation not to erase the past, but to build a future where every child in Chicago has access to healing, safety, and hope."

As the crowd applauded, Hannah’s eyes swept over the upper mezzanine balcony. In the dim light behind a velvet curtain, she caught the faint glint of a silver wristwatch.

Julian Rossi was standing on the upper level, dressed in a waiter’s uniform, holding a concealed suppressed sidearm tucked beneath a serving tray. He looked gaunt, desperate, his eyes filled with the madness of a man who had lost everything and wanted only to drag his enemies down with him into the abyss.

Hannah didn't pause her speech. She looked directly toward Roman, giving him a subtle glance toward the western balcony.

Roman caught her signal instantly. He didn't make a scene. He simply turned to Dominic, whispering a single word: "West."

Julian raised his weapon from the shadows of the balcony, aiming directly down at the podium. "For Dante..." he whispered bitterly to himself, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Before he could squeeze the trigger, a hand like steel wrapped around his wrist, forcing the barrel toward the ceiling.

Pfft! A suppressed shot fired harmlessly into the plaster ornamentation above.

Julian gasped as Roman slammed him against the balcony wall, disarming him with effortless brutality. The sidearm clattered onto the carpeted floor.

Julian struggled wildly, but Roman held him pinned by the throat, his dark eyes burning with absolute, terrifying power.

"You came to my wife’s gala with a gun, Julian?" Roman hissed, his voice low enough that the crowd below—still listening to Hannah’s closing remarks—didn't notice the silent struggle above. "You really are as foolish as your brother."

"Kill me, then!" Julian choked out, a dark, manic grin on his face. "Do it! Prove to everyone in this room that you're still the same mobster monster you always were!"

Roman stared at Julian for a long, quiet moment. Five years ago, Roman would have broken his neck without a second thought. But as he looked down at the main floor, he saw Hannah finishing her speech, receiving a standing ovation from the city's leaders. He saw the world she had given him—a world of light, honor, and true legacy.

Slowly, Roman loosened his grip, stepping back.

Two federal agents rushed onto the balcony, slamming handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists and forcing him to his knees.

"I don't need to kill you, Julian," Roman said coldly, adjusting his cuffs. "You're going to spend the rest of your life in a small, windowless cell next to Dante. And every day, you'll watch on the news as my family continues to build this city."

Julian spat blood onto the floor, cursing frantically as the feds dragged him down the service stairs into waiting police vans.

Roman straightened his tuxedo jacket and walked down the grand staircase into the main hall. Hannah stepped off the stage, meeting him at the bottom of the stairs.

She looked up at him, her dark eyes filled with pride and relief. "Is it really over?"

Roman took her hand, lifting it to his lips and kissing her palm softly. "It’s over, Hannah. The Rossi name is gone. The past is finally dead."
