Chapter 16 - The Unbroken Thread

With Julian Rossi facing federal indictment without bail, the final dark shadow over the Moretti family evaporated. The weeks following the Drake Hotel incident brought an unprecedented sense of peace and expansion.
The state legislature officially approved a multi-million-dollar grant matching program for the Moretti Foundation, solidifying its position as the premier healthcare network in northern Illinois.
It was a crisp Saturday morning in late spring. The sun was bright, warming the cobblestone courtyard of the estate.
Hannah sat at a garden table, sketching designs for a new pediatric convalescent home near Lake Michigan. Nine-year-old Owen was sitting beside her, meticulously building a complex model airplane, while little Clara—now an active fourteen-month-old toddler—was happily chasing butterflies under the watchful eye of their security dog.
Roman walked out of the house, dressed in a casual charcoal sweater and trousers. He was holding a wax-sealed parchment envelope that had arrived via certified international courier from Rome.
Hannah looked up, catching the intrigued look on her husband’s face. "What’s that?"
Roman sat beside her, tracing the red wax seal stamped with an intricate crest. "It arrived from the Vatican library this morning. It’s the official historical restoration report on my grandfather’s ancestral estate in Sicily."
Hannah’s eyes lit up. "The vineyard in Taormina?"
"The very same," Roman smiled softly. "When my father came to Chicago fifty years ago, the family land in Sicily was seized due to local syndicate debts. Last year, Marcus quietly bought back the entire estate through a neutral preservation trust and cleared all historical liens."
Owen looked up from his airplane, his eyes wide. "We have a castle in Italy, Dad?"
Roman laughed—a rich, deep sound that warmed Hannah’s heart. "Not a castle, buddy. A villa on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean ocean, covered in olive trees and grapevines."
Roman opened the envelope, pulling out several high-resolution photographs of the restored villa. The main house was a breathtaking structure of golden stone, red terracotta roof tiles, and wide stone terraces looking out over the sparkling blue waters of the sea.
"It’s beautiful, Roman," Hannah whispered, studying the photos.
"I bought it for us," Roman said softly, taking her hand under the table. "For our family. I want Owen and Clara to grow up knowing that their roots aren't just built on the concrete streets of Chicago. Their legacy is built on beauty, history, and restoration."
"When do we leave?" Hannah asked, a brilliant smile spreading across her face.
"How does two weeks in June sound?" Roman replied, his dark eyes twinkling with romantic intent. "A summer family vacation. No security details, no legal briefs, no corporate board meetings. Just us, the ocean, and the sun."
"I think Director Moretti approves of this plan," Hannah teased gently, leaning in to press her lips to his.

Owen covered his eyes playfully. "Eww, Mom, Dad, not again!"
Roman and Hannah burst out laughing as Clara toddled over, babbling happily and throwing her hands into the air, demanding to be picked up. Roman lifted his daughter high onto his shoulder, his family gathered around him in the warm afternoon sun.
