Chapter 10 - The Empire of Love

One year later. Early summer.
The terrace of our penthouse overlooking Central Park was flooded with warm, golden evening sunlight.
A soft breeze rustled through the white peony bushes growing in large terra-cotta pots along the stone balustrade.
I sat in a comfortable outdoor armchair, wearing a simple linen dress, holding my sketchpad, reviewing new architectural concepts for an international children's hospital project Bennett Creative Studios was designing pro bono.
Inside the open French doors of the living room, seven-year-old Mia was sitting at the grand piano, practicing a simple melody while Sarah clapped along to the rhythm.
The heavy glass door opened softly, and Adrian stepped out onto the terrace.
He had removed his tie and unbuttoned his collar, looking relaxed, radiant, and endlessly handsome. He carried two glasses of iced tea, setting one down on the small table beside me.
He sat on the arm of my chair, wrapping one large arm around my shoulders, drawing me close against his side.
"How was your day, CEO?" I teased softly, resting my head against his ribs.
"Boring until I came home to you," Adrian smiled, pressing a sweet kiss against the top of my head. "The board approved the new foundation endowment this morning. Ten million dollars allocated to single-mother educational scholarships across New York."
"That's incredible, sweetheart," I beamed, looking up at him with deep pride.
Adrian looked down at me, his fingers gently tracing the curve of my stomach, where a subtle, beautiful bump was beginning to show beneath my linen dress—our second child, a boy, due in four months.
"How is he doing today?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a soft, tender whisper as he rested his hand over my stomach.
"He's active," I laughed softly, placing my hand over his. "He's going to be just as loud and stubborn as his father."
"Good," Adrian smiled, his dark eyes glistening with quiet happiness. "This world could use another Kane who knows how to fight for what matters."
Mia came running out onto the terrace, throwing herself against Adrian’s legs. "Daddy! Look! I played the whole song without missing a key!"
Adrian reached down, lifting Mia effortlessly onto his lap, hugging her tight against his chest. "I heard you, princess. You sounded like a professional."
Mia leaned her head against Adrian’s chest, looking at my soft belly, then looked up at her father.
"Daddy?" Mia asked.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Remember that day in the office hallway when I told you that you should be my daddy?"
Adrian let out a soft, warm laugh, looking over Mia’s head to lock his gray-blue eyes with mine—eyes filled with an endless, unshakeable love that had transformed our entire world.
"I remember every single second of it, Mia," Adrian whispered, kissing her hair, then leaning over to press his lips gently against mine.

"That was the best decision you ever made," Mia grinned happily, snuggling closer between us.
And as the sun dipped behind the Manhattan skyline, casting a golden glow over our home, I rested my head against my husband's shoulder, holding my daughter’s hand, completely surrounded by the greatest empire ever built: an unbreakable family bound by love.
