Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Storm

Though Julian was permanently behind bars facing a twenty-year federal sentence, a new threat emerged from the place I least expected: the board of Blackwell & Reed.

News of the attempted extortion had leaked to the senior shareholders— leaked intentionally by Richard Blackwell, the bitter seventy-year-old co-founder who had been looking for an excuse to push Adrian out of the CEO position for years.

On Monday morning, an emergency board meeting was called on the top floor.

I sat at the end of the long mahogany conference table, holding my leather portfolio, my posture straight. Beside me sat Adrian, looking utterly unbothered, though the atmosphere in the room was charged with corporate electricity.

"This is an outrage, Adrian!" Richard Blackwell slammed his fist onto the table, his face red with fury. "You’re dating a junior creative director! Her past brought federal agents and extortion scandals to our front door! The press is having a field day!"

The twelve board members murmured in agreement, looking at me with cold, judgmental eyes.

"Clara’s past was handled with absolute legal precision, Richard," Adrian stated calmly, resting his hands on the table. "And she is not a junior director. She is the principal architect of the European branding campaign that just secured us a $400 million contract with LVMH."

"That doesn't excuse the conflict of interest!" Richard barked. "A CEO cannot maintain an intimate relationship with a subordinate! It violates corporate governance! Either she resigns today, or the board calls for a vote of no confidence against you!"

I felt a cold spike of panic in my chest. I looked at Adrian. His entire career—everything he had built over a decade—was being threatened because of me.

I stood up slowly, pulling my folder toward me.

"Mr. Blackwell," I said, my voice cutting through the tense room with sharp, professional clarity. "You are entirely correct."

Adrian spun his head to look at me, his eyes widening in shock. "Clara, no—"

"I submit my formal resignation as Senior Creative Director of Blackwell & Reed, effective immediately," I said, placing my signed resignation letter on the mahogany table.

"Clara, sit down!" Adrian commanded, his voice laced with sudden, raw panic. "I will not allow you to sacrifice your career for this board!"

"I'm not sacrificing anything, Adrian," I smiled softly, looking at him with absolute confidence. "Two months ago, I completed the legal registration for Bennett Creative Studios. My firm signed three major independent luxury clients this morning. I don't need Blackwell & Reed anymore."

I turned my head to address Richard Blackwell and the stunned board members.

"My personal life is no longer subject to your corporate governance," I stated clearly. "And as an independent contractor, my studio will be billing Blackwell & Reed at double my previous rate for the completion of the European launch."

Silence fell over the boardroom.

A slow, proud grin spread across Adrian’s face. He leaned back in his leather chair, looking at Richard with complete victory in his eyes.

"You heard the lady, Richard," Adrian chuckled softly. "Approve her independent contract, or watch our European launch collapse by Friday."

May you like

Richard’s mouth worked uselessly, his face turning from red to purple, before he slumped back into his chair, utterly defeated.

I picked up my briefcase, gave the board a polite nod, and walked out of the executive wing with my head held high—a free, independent woman.
