Chapter 4 - The Lion's Shield

The atmosphere inside Adrian’s penthouse that night was scarier than any corporate courtroom I had ever seen.

Adrian stood by the glass terrace doors, holding a glass of scotch he hadn't touched. His face was carved from granite. Standing near the dining table were two men in dark suits—his chief of security, Marcus, and his senior legal counsel, Arthur Vance.

I sat on the sofa, wrapped in Adrian’s large sweater, holding a warm cup of tea that had gone cold. Mia was asleep upstairs in the guest bedroom, protected by two armed guards Adrian had posted at the front gates.

"Julian Vance," Arthur reported, reading from a tablet. "He returned to the U.S. three weeks ago under a false passport. He owes $1.2 million to European creditors and is currently being investigated for international wire fraud."

Adrian slowly turned around. The look in his eyes made my breath catch. It wasn't panic. It was absolute, lethal dominance.

"Where is he staying?" Adrian asked flatly.

"A budget motel near JFK," Marcus replied. "He’s broke, desperate, and using cheap burner phones."

"Good," Adrian said quietly. He walked over to the sofa, sitting down beside me. He took my shaking hands into his, bringing them to his lips, kissing my knuckles gently.

"Clara," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a soft, comforting tone. "Look at me."

I raised my tear-stained eyes to meet his.

"Julian is never going to touch Mia," Adrian swore, his voice laced with unshakeable certainty. "He is never going to step within a mile of your daughter. And he is certainly never going to take a single dime from this family."

"This family?" I whispered, my heart skipping a beat at the word.

"You and Mia are my family now, Clara," Adrian said simply, as if it were the most natural law of the universe. "Julian thinks he’s playing a game of extortion against a frightened single mother. He doesn't realize he just declared war on Kane Global."

He looked up at his legal counsel.

"Arthur, execute Phase One immediately," Adrian commanded. "Contact the federal prosecutors handling Vance’s European fraud warrants. Unseal the back-child-support judgments in New York State. Have the state police prepare an arrest warrant for extortion and felony child endangerment."

"And the money he demanded?" Arthur asked.

Adrian smiled—a cold, terrifying expression that sent chills down my spine.

"Tell him to meet us tomorrow night at the private hangar at Teterboro Airport to collect his check," Adrian ordered. "I want to look into that man's eyes before he goes to federal prison for the rest of his life."
