Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Promise

Three months later. Autumn in Manhattan.

Bennett Creative Studios had taken the New York design world by storm. Operating out of a sunlit, renovated loft space in SoHo, my team of six talented designers was handling major luxury campaigns across the country.

I was no longer just surviving; I was thriving.

And at the center of my new life stood Adrian.

He had become an unshakeable rock for Mia and me. He attended Mia’s school play—sitting in the front row of the elementary school auditorium in a $6,000 suit, clapping louder than any other parent when Mia played a singing sunflower. He taught her how to ride a bicycle in Central Park, running alongside her with endless patience until she could balance on her own.

One late October evening, rain was drizzling softly over the city.

Mia was sleeping soundly in her bedroom at Adrian’s penthouse, surrounded by her favorite books and a massive new stuffed elephant Adrian had bought her.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse living room, holding a glass of red wine, watching the fog roll across Central Park.

Warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling my back against a broad, warm chest. Adrian rested his chin on my shoulder, his lips pressing a soft kiss against my neck.

"You're quiet tonight, beautiful," Adrian whispered.

"I was just thinking," I smiled, leaning back against him. "About a year ago. I was drowning, Adrian. I was terrified every single day that I wouldn't be enough for Mia. That I would fail her."

Adrian turned me in his arms, his dark gray-blue eyes looking down into mine with a fierce, burning devotion.

"You never failed her, Clara," Adrian said gently, tracing the line of my jaw with his thumb. "You built a sanctuary for her out of sheer willpower. You are the strongest woman I have ever known."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, sleek velvet box.

My heart stopped beating.

"Adrian..." I breathed, my breath catching in my throat.

He dropped down onto one knee on the hardwood floor, looking up at me with raw, unguarded vulnerability.

"Clara Bennett," Adrian said, his voice trembling slightly. "From the moment your daughter called me out in that executive hallway, my heart has belonged to both of you. You gave me a home when I didn't even know I was homeless. Will you do me the honor of making me the happiest man in the world? Will you marry me?"

He opened the box. Inside rested a magnificent, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the light of the fireplace like a fallen star.

Tears spilled down my cheeks—tears of pure, unadulterated joy.

"Yes!" I sobbed, dropping to my knees beside him, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!"

He pulled me into a fierce, passionate kiss, his hands holding my face as if I were the most precious treasure on earth.

From the hallway doorway, a soft giggle sounded.

We turned around to see Mia standing in her floral pajamas, clutching Gerald the elephant, her eyes big and bright.

"Does this mean he’s officially my daddy now?" Mia asked, tilting her head.

May you like

Adrian laughed—that same warm, helpless, wonderful laugh that had changed my life forever—and held out his arm. "Come here, Mia."

Mia ran across the room, throwing herself into our arms, and Adrian wrapped his broad shoulders around both of us, holding his family tight against his chest.
