Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at Teterboro

The storm raging over New Jersey matched the darkness inside the private hangar at Teterboro Airport.
Rain pounded against the corrugated steel roof as a single black Maybach sat parked in the center of the vast, echoing space.
Inside the vehicle, I sat in the backseat, holding Adrian’s hand tightly. My heart was pounding, but seeing Adrian’s calm, immovable posture gave me a courage I hadn't felt in six years.
Outside, a battered rental sedan pulled into the hangar, its headlights cutting through the dim interior.
A man stepped out—Julian.
He looked worn, disheveled, and thin, wearing a leather jacket that was too big for him. But his eyes still held that arrogant, selfish glint that had broken my heart seven years ago.
"Stay in the car, Clara," Adrian whispered, pressing a tender kiss against my temple. "This will only take five minutes."
Adrian opened the door and stepped out into the cold hangar. He stood tall, towering over Julian in every conceivable way—a titan standing before an insect.
Julian grinned, trying to act confident, though he took an instinctual step back at the sheer aura of authority radiating from my boss.
"Mr. Kane," Julian sneered, folding his arms. "I see you brought the money. Smart move. I hear billionaire reputations don't do well when child abandonment stories hit the New York Post."
Adrian walked slowly toward him, stopping ten feet away. He didn't say a word. He just stared at Julian with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.
"Where’s the check?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking slightly under Adrian’s heavy gaze. "Give me the two million, and I sign the custody waiver. You get the kid, I get my money, everybody wins."
"You called Mia a 'kid,'" Adrian said quietly, his deep voice carrying through the silent hangar. "You referred to an innocent six-year-old girl who carries your blood as a bargaining chip."
"She’s my biological daughter!" Julian snapped.
"No," Adrian corrected him, taking two steps forward. Julian flinched backward. "You provided DNA, Vance. A dog can do that. Being a father requires honor, sacrifice, and love. You possess none of those things."
Adrian pulled a thick white envelope from his coat pocket.
Julian’s eyes lit up with pathetic greed. "Is that the wire transfer confirmation?"
"No," Adrian said softly. "This is a certified copy of the federal arrest warrant issued thirty minutes ago by the Southern District of New York."
Julian froze, his face draining of all color. "What?!"
Heavy footsteps echoed from the shadows of the hangar.
Six armed federal marshals stepped out from behind the private jets, their badges flashing in the dim light, weapons drawn.
"Julian Vance!" the lead agent barked. "Drop to your knees and put your hands behind your head! You are under arrest for international fraud, extortion, and interstate flight!"
Julian stumbled back, panic seizing his features. "Clara! CLARA!" he screamed toward the Maybach. "Tell them to stop! You can't do this to me!"
I opened the Maybach door and stepped out into the rain, standing beside Adrian.
I looked at the man who had abandoned me, who had left me to starve in a cold apartment six years ago, who had tried to terrorize my child for cash.
"You're wrong, Julian," I said, my voice completely steady, echoing through the hangar. "I can do this. Because I am no longer alone."
May you like
The marshals slammed Julian onto the concrete floor, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, dragging him away into the stormy night.
Adrian wrapped his warm coat around my shoulders, pulling me against his side. I buried my face in his chest, letting out a long, shuddering breath as six years of fear finally melted away into the rain.
