Chapter 5 - Shadow Games

Three days passed. Khloe remained under strict observation in the hospital's VIP pavilion. Though her physical condition was improving, the psychological toll remained heavy. Every time she closed her eyes, she replayed the moment Isabella’s heel struck her side.
Marcus barely left her side, relocating his primary operations to a mobile office setup in the adjoining living suite. He personally approved every meal served to her, doubled the security detail outside the room, and spent every evening sitting beside her bed, reading to her and holding her hand until she fell asleep.
On the fourth afternoon, while Marcus was in a brief strategy call with his legal team, Khloe’s door swung open quietly.
An older woman dressed in an elegant black suit stepped inside. It was Eleanor Rossi, Isabella's mother—a matriarch known for her ruthlessness in high society circles.
"Khloe," Eleanor said softly, closing the door behind her.
Khloe sat up, her heart racing as her eyes darted to the panic button beside her pillow. "How did you get in here? Security—"
"The guards were called away for a minor security breach downstairs—a little distraction my husband paid for," Eleanor said smoothly, walking toward the bed with a somber expression. "I came to appeal to your humanity, child."
Khloe’s hands trembled beneath the bedsheets, but she forced herself to meet Eleanor's cold eyes. "Humanity? Your daughter tried to kill my baby."
"Isabella was foolish," Eleanor admitted, stepping closer. "She let her emotions get the better of her. But she is young, Khloe. A trial like this will ruin her life forever. You have Marcus, you have wealth, you have your child intact. Why destroy a family over a mistake?"
Khloe let out a bitter laugh. "A mistake? She kicked me, Eleanor. She looked me in the eyes and told me to give Marcus an heir and disappear!"
Eleanor’s face hardened, the artificial motherly warmth vanishing instantly. "Listen to me very carefully, Khloe Vance. You are a nobody. You married into the Thorne family by sheer luck. If you proceed with these charges, my husband will release medical records from your late mother’s psychiatric history. We will drag your family's name through the mud until Marcus himself grows disgusted by you. Sign an affidavit stating the incident was an accident, and we will compensate you with fifty million dollars."
Khloe felt a wave of anger wash over her fear. She looked at Eleanor, her eyes burning with a strength she didn't know she possessed.
"Keep your money," Khloe said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "And bring whatever lies you want to court. Because when Isabella is sentenced to prison, I’ll be standing right there watching her wear handcuffs."
Before Eleanor could step forward, the suite door crashed open. Marcus stood in the doorway, his eyes dark with murderous fury, accompanied by four armed security guards and Dr. Arthur Vance.
"Get your hands off my wife," Marcus roared.
Eleanor turned, attempting to maintain her posture. "Marcus, I was simply trying to reach a reasonable—"
"Gabe!" Marcus shouted. "Have Mrs. Rossi arrested for trespassing, witness intimidation, and breaking a judicial restraining order!"
Two guards grabbed Eleanor’s arms, hauling her backward out of the room as she protested loudly.
Marcus rushed to Khloe’s side, wrapping his arms around her tightly as her body trembled from the confrontation. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I left you alone for five minutes—"

"Marcus," Khloe whispered, leaning into his warm chest, her hands resting against his back. "I didn't back down. I didn't let her scare me."
Marcus looked down at her, a profound sense of pride and love washing over him. He kissed her forehead gently. "You were incredible, sweetheart. Now it's my turn to finish them."
