Chapter 6 - Deepening Alliances

The news of Eleanor Rossi's attempt to intimidate Khloe in her hospital bed exploded across international headlines the next morning. The public outrage was immediate and overwhelming. Boycotts against the Rossi family's subsidiaries spread globally, while support poured in for Khloe from women's rights groups, pregnancy advocacy networks, and high society leaders who had previously ignored her.

In a quiet corner of the hospital garden, Marcus sat across from Arthur Vance and Gabe Vance over coffee.

"We found the vulnerability in the Rossi logistics infrastructure," Gabe reported, sliding a thick folder across the table. "They’ve been using under-the-table shell companies in Panama to avoid maritime tariffs for the past six years. It’s systematic tax fraud amounting to nearly eight hundred million dollars."

Arthur took a sip of his black coffee, his expression serious. "Victor Rossi is desperate, Marcus. He's cornered. Cornered animals do dangerous things. You need to make sure Khloe is completely shielded."

"She’s being discharged tomorrow," Marcus said. "I’m moving her to our private estate in the Hamptons. It has an ironclad security system, a full medical team on standby, and no media presence."

"Good," Arthur nodded. "How is she doing emotionally?"

Marcus looked out over the lush green grass of the garden, his face softening. "She’s stronger than I thought. But she still carries doubts. She spent months believing that our marriage was just a business transaction... because I treated it like one for so long."

"You were protecting yourself after what happened with your father," Arthur noted gently. "Your father treated love like a asset on a balance sheet. Khloe isn't like that. She married you because she genuinely cared, Marcus. Show her she was right to trust you."

That evening, back in the hospital suite, Marcus surprised Khloe with a candlelight dinner catered directly from her favorite quiet Italian restaurant—not the flashy places high society frequented, but the little bistro in Brooklyn she used to visit before they married.

Khloe looked at the soft dinner table set up near the balcony window, complete with non-alcoholic sparkling cider and rose petals. "Marcus... what is all this?"

"A real date," Marcus said softly, holding out her chair. "No cameras. No board members. No gala politics. Just you and me."

As they ate, Marcus shared stories from his childhood—stories he had never told anyone, about the crushing pressure of being raised as the heir to the Thorne empire, his fears of failing, and how meeting Khloe had quietly anchored him during the darkest moments of his life.

"I didn't know how to express it, Khloe," Marcus confessed, holding her hand across the table. "I was terrified that if I showed how much I needed you, my enemies would use you against me. And because of my silence, I ended up letting Isabella hurt you. I will never forgive myself for that."

Khloe squeezed his hand, tears glistening in her eyes. "You're protecting me now, Marcus. That's all that matters to me."

May you like

"No," Marcus corrected gently, rising from his seat and kneeling beside her chair, placing his hand over her seven-month baby bump. "Protecting you is my duty. Loving you is my privilege."

For the first time in months, Khloe felt a profound wave of peace wash over her heart. The terror of the attack began to recede, replaced by an unshakable trust in the man standing by her side.
