Chapter 7 - The Trial Begins

Two weeks later, the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, news vans, and quiet onlookers. The trial of The State of New York v. Isabella Rossi had officially commenced.

Isabella was escorted into the courtroom wearing a modest dark gray suit, her hair tied back simple, her face devoid of makeup in a desperate attempt to appear humble and remorseful to the jury. Her legal team had built their defense around a claim of temporary diminished capacity, alleging she suffered from severe anxiety and felt threatened by Khloe during an argument over family business.

Khloe walked into the courtroom leaning gently on Marcus's arm. She wore an elegant cream-colored maternity coat, her head held high, radiating poise and quiet strength. Beside them sat Dr. Arthur Vance, who was slated to testify as the chief medical expert.

The prosecution opened with devastating force. They called the head of hospital security, who verified the authenticity of the surveillance tapes. Then, Dr. Arthur Vance took the witness stand.

"Dr. Vance," the lead prosecutor began, "can you describe the injuries Mrs. Thorne sustained when she was admitted to your trauma bay?"

"Mrs. Thorne suffered severe blunt force trauma to her lower right flank," Arthur testified clearly, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The force was localized and consistent with a pointed, concentrated blow—such as the heel of a designer shoe. This force caused a partial placental abruption, leading to immediate internal hemorrhaging and putting the fetal life in critical danger."

Isabella’s defense attorney stood up. "Objection! Dr. Vance is the victim's uncle! His medical opinion is inherently biased!"

"The ultrasound readings, surgical logs, and fetal monitor printouts were verified by three independent non-affiliated physicians from Mount Sinai," Arthur replied smoothly before the judge could even rule. "The data doesn't lie, Counselor."

The prosecution then played the video on large screens facing the jury box.

The courtroom gasped as Isabella’s voice rang through the speakers: "You were supposed to know your place. Smile for the cameras. Give him an heir. Then disappear." The brutal kick followed, along with Khloe's heartbreaking cry of agony.

Several jurors covered their mouths, looking at Isabella with undisguised horror. Isabella bowed her head, squeezing her eyes shut as her attorney desperately tried to whisper instructions to her.

When Khloe took the stand, the entire courtroom held its breath.

"Mrs. Thorne," the prosecutor asked softly. "Can you tell the jury what you felt during those moments inside the suite?"

Khloe looked directly at the twelve jurors, her voice clear and unwavering. "I wasn't thinking about who Isabella was, or what she wanted from my husband. I was only thinking about protecting my child. I covered my stomach and prayed that he would survive the night. When she kicked me, I didn't feel anger—I felt terrifying fear that I would lose my baby before I ever got to hold him."

She glanced over at Isabella, who refused to look up.

"She believed that because she was wealthy and powerful, she could inflict violence in private without consequences," Khloe concluded. "She was wrong."
