Chapter 7 - The Downfall of the Brooks Family
As police officers handcuffed Julian in front of live television cameras, Eleanor and Vanessa tried to slip out through the back garden exit.
However, two federal agents blocked their path.
"Eleanor Brooks, Vanessa Brooks," the lead agent announced, pulling out a warrant. "You are under arrest for tax evasion, wire fraud, and witness tampering."
"Do you know who we are?!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking as the handcuffs clicked around her wrists. "You can't do this to us!"
"We know exactly who you are," the agent replied. "The Sinclair Group foreclosed on your family company two hours ago. You are officially bankrupt."
Vanessa broke down into hysterical sobs as she was dragged down the marble staircase, the same staircase where she had looked down on others for years. The guests who had once flattered her now pulled out their phones, filming her disgrace with cold indifference.
The public reaction was swift and devastating. The Brooks family name was stripped from every board, charity, and social register in the state. Their fortune was seized to pay back defrauded investors, leaving them with nothing.
