Chapter 14 - Breaking the Ice

A blizzard warnings swept across the Great Lakes by late evening. The wind screamed through the surrounding white pines, whipping Walloon Lake into a violent froth before the temperature dropped so rapidly that the surface began to freeze into sheets of jagged black ice.

Power lines collapsed three miles south, plunging the shore into complete darkness. The only light inside the timber house came from the roaring stone fireplace.

Liam sat at the dining table, a single oil lamp illuminating the pages of Arthur Pendelton’s hidden ledger. Nora was sitting across from him, quiet, distant, yet watching his every move with a mixture of heartbreak and fierce resolution.

"Arthur planted us here," Liam muttered, tracing a row of offshore transaction codes. "He knew I would seek a quiet life after the trial. He set up this house, offered it to your family, and used us as a shield to hide his own offshore network."

"Why?" Nora asked, her voice tight. "He cured my mother, Liam! He spent months tending to her!"

"Because as long as I was blamed for Mercer’s death and the missing funds, the authorities would never look at a retired countryside doctor," Liam replied grimly. "The call last night, the photos... Arthur realizes the FBI is closing in. He’s liquidating the funds now, and he intends to pin every cent on me before he flees."

Suddenly, the front window shattered into a shower of dangerous glass shards.

A heavy rock, wrapped in dark cloth, thudded onto the rug. Liam immediately tackled Nora to the floor, covering her body with his as a shadow moved outside on the snow-covered porch.

"Stay down!" Liam commanded. He scrambled to his feet, grabbing a heavy brass poker from the fireplace hearth.

The back door crashed open. Two men wearing tactical masks and armed with iron bars burst into the kitchen. They weren't police—they were hired muscle.

"Where is the master key ledger, Vance?" one of the men barked, his voice muffled by the mask. "Hand it over, and we let the women walk!"

Liam didn't hesitate. Driven by a primal urge to protect the woman he loved, he charged forward. He swung the brass poker, catching the first intruder across the arm, knocking his weapon to the floor. The second man lunged at Liam, tackling him into the glass coffee table, which shattered under their combined weight.

Nora screamed as Liam struggled against the larger attacker on the floor. Shards of glass sliced through Liam’s sweater, but he fought with desperate, feral strength. He drove his elbow into the man’s ribs, flipped their positions, and slammed the intruder's head against the hard oak floor until the man went limp.

The first intruder recovered and pulled a switchblade, lunging at Liam’s exposed back.

"Liam, move!" Nora yelled.

She picked up a heavy cast-iron skillet from the kitchen counter and swung it with all her strength, striking the attacker squarely across the jaw. The man collapsed onto the rug, unconscious.

Breathing heavily, his forehead bleeding from a sharp cut, Liam pulled himself up. He looked at Nora, who stood holding the skillet, her cheeks flushed, her eyes blazing not with fear, but with fierce, unconditional loyalty.

"You... hit him with a frying pan," Liam panted, a breathless, astonished laugh escaping his lips despite the chaos.

"Nobody touches my husband," Nora said firmly, her voice trembling slightly as she dropped the skillet and ran into his arms, burying her face against his neck, ignoring the damp snow and blood on his coat.

In that moment, amid the broken glass and howling wind, the wall of distrust between them vanished. They were in the storm together.
