Chapter 29 - The Final Storm

Three weeks later, the last remnants of the winter storm had melted away, replaced by the crisp, breathtaking sunshine of early spring over Walloon Lake. The dark scandal that had threatened to tear their lives apart had faded into a quiet memory, buried beneath the natural rhythm of the northern wilderness.

The timber house had been fully restored. The broken glass was replaced with heavy double-paned windows, the floorboards were polished, and the massive stone fireplace crackled gently with fresh cedar logs, filling the spacious living room with warmth and light.

In the soft glow of the late afternoon, Liam stood out on the wooden dock, watching the sun dip below the western horizon, painting the clear lake waters in shades of soft gold, violet, and pale pink. He wore a dark wool sweater, his broad hands resting comfortably in his pockets, his posture relaxed and grounded.

There were no satellite phones in his pockets. No hidden ledgers in his study. No shadows waiting in the treeline.

Soft, familiar footsteps crunched against the gravel behind him. Nora walked out onto the wooden planks, wrapped in a soft cream shawl, holding two mugs of hot tea.

She slid next to him, handing him a mug and resting her head naturally against his shoulder. Liam wrapped a long, strong arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side.

"Agent Cross sent the final paperwork this morning," Nora murmured softly, a peaceful smile playing on her lips. "The assets Arthur tried to frame you with have been seized, and the court case is officially closed. It’s over, Liam. Really over."

Liam looked down at her, tracing the line of her cheek with his thumb. "It’s not over, Nora. It’s only just starting."

"What is?" she asked, looking up into his clear, calm eyes.

"Our life," Liam whispered. "A life where I don't have to hide who I am. A life where I get to spend every single day showing you how grateful I am for your faith."

Nora’s eyes softened, filled with a deep, radiant warmth. She took his broad, calloused hand—the hand bearing his silver wedding band—and gently placed it against her lower abdomen beneath the wool shawl.

Liam froze, his breath catching in his throat. He looked from her hand to her face, his pulse accelerating in a completely new, overwhelming way.

"Nora...?" he breathed, his voice trembling with awe.

Nora smiled through happy tears, nodding gently. "Dr. Vance confirmed it yesterday. The baby is coming in November. Right around the time of the first snowfall."

Liam dropped to his knees on the wooden dock, burying his face against her waist, holding her close as tears of profound, unadulterated gratitude spilled down his cheeks. Nora ran her fingers tenderly through his hair, laughing softly through her own joy as the setting sun bathed them both in an unbreakable golden light.
