Chapter 15 - Fractured Trust

By morning, the blizzard had passed, leaving behind a thick shroud of fog over Walloon Lake. The two intruders had been dragged into the basement and bound with heavy thick rope, but when Liam checked their coats, he found encrypted radios tuned to a local frequency.
A signal crackled through the small speaker: "Status on Walloon? Is the package secured?"
It was Dr. Arthur Pendelton’s calm, educated voice.
Liam held the radio up to his lips, his voice cold as steel. "They failed, Arthur. And I have your ledger."
A long silence stretched over the airwaves. When Arthur spoke again, his voice had lost all its grandfatherly warmth. It was cold, calculating, and devoid of remorse.
"Ah, Liam. I had hoped to settle this cleanly. You were always such a tragic figure—so eager to play the martyr for Nora. Did you really think a sweet girl like her could love a man with hands as dirty as yours? I gave her mother life so Nora would look at you with gratitude, not disgust. I crafted your redemption."
Nora took the radio from Liam’s hand, her fingers steady despite her inner turmoil. "You used my mother's illness to manipulate us, Arthur. You are a monster."
"I am a businessman, my dear Nora," Arthur replied softly. "And right now, Agent Cross has a search warrant for your timber house. In less than an hour, federal agents will find two million dollars in cash buried in your boat house—cash I had my men place there last night while you were distracted. Liam will go to federal prison for life. Unless..."
"Unless what?" Liam growled, taking the phone back.
"Unless you bring me my master ledger to the old ice-house on the north point of the lake in thirty minutes. Alone. Give me the ledger, and I will transfer the offshore accounts out of your name and clear your record with Agent Cross using my backup tapes. Try to call the police, and I trigger an anonymous tip that will put Nora’s mother in an interrogation room as an accomplice."
The line went dead.
Nora grabbed Liam’s arm, her eyes wide with panic. "You can't go! It’s a trap, Liam! He’ll kill you once he gets the ledger!"
"I have to go, Nora," Liam said gently, cupping her face in his broad hands. He kissed her forehead softly, his eyes filled with a deep, unwavering resolve. "Two years ago, I ran. I hid behind lies and quiet lakes. But true faith isn't running from the fire—it’s walking through it to protect what you love. I won't let him hurt you or your mother ever again."
"Then I’m coming with you," Nora demanded.
May you like
"No," Liam replied firmly. "I need you to do something harder. I need you to find Agent Cross before Arthur’s men do. Show him the ledger pages I copied. Trust me one last time, Nora."
Nora looked into his eyes, seeing the quiet, unbreakable man she had married. She nodded slowly, tears brimming in her eyes. "Come back to me, Liam. Do you hear me? Come back home."
