Chapter 28 - The Conspiracy Unraveled

It wasn't Arthur’s gun that had fired.
Agent Cross had executed a precise, non-lethal shot, striking Arthur cleanly through his right shoulder. The revolver slipped from Arthur’s numb, leather-gloved fingers, clattering uselessly across the smooth black ice. Arthur collapsed to his knees with a hoarse cry of pain, clutching his bleeding arm as two tactical agents rushed forward, tackling him to the ice and pulling his arms behind his back in heavy steel cuffs.
Liam stood unmoving in the center of the frozen bay, his chest heaving, steam rising from his soot-stained sweater in the crisp air.
Nora broke away from the police perimeter, ignoring the slippery black ice, running as fast as her winter boots could carry her. "Liam!"
Liam met her halfway, catching her mid-stride, lifting her off her feet as she threw her arms tightly around his neck. He buried his face into her hair, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of her, feeling the cold ashes of his past finally blow away into the northern wind.
"You came back," she sobbed softly, her warm tears wetting his soot-covered cheek as she pressed desperate kisses to his face. "You came back to me."
"I told you," Liam whispered, his voice thick with unreserved emotion as he held her close. "I’m never leaving you again."
Agent Cross walked over, his stern face softening as he looked at the couple. He signaled his team to escort the bleeding Arthur Pendelton toward the waiting medical van.
"Mr. Vance," Cross said, holding out his hand. "The audio recording and the secondary files we recovered from Pendelton’s briefcase clear you completely of the Mercer homicide, the arson, and the offshore fraud. Arthur Pendelton and his remaining associates will be spending the rest of their natural lives in federal custody."
Cross paused, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a official federal document folder. "The Department of Justice owes you an unconditional apology, Liam. Your record is fully expunged. As far as the United States government is concerned, you are a completely free man."

Liam took the document, then turned his gaze back to Nora’s tear-stained, radiant face. For the first time in five long, agonizing years, the crushing weight in his chest—the guilt, the fear, the constant expectation of doom—vanished completely.
He was truly, undeniably free.
