Chapter 8 - The Reckoning

The red and blue lights of three state police cruisers reflected off the snow-covered pines outside the Vance estate.
Gwen was led out of the house in handcuffs, her expensive coat dragging in the mud, her face frozen in a expression of bitter, ugly defeat. She didn't look at Liam as the officers guided her into the back of the patrol car. She didn't say a word. The web of lies she had spun for twenty years had finally collapsed under the weight of the truth.
Liam sat on the tailgate of an ambulance parked near the rusted gates, a heavy orange emergency blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
A paramedic checked his vitals, but Liam barely felt the blood pressure cuff inflating around his arm. His eyes never left the second ambulance parked ten feet away.
Inside, Nora sat swaddled in warm blankets, drinking hot tea from a paper cup while a female paramedic treated the frostbite on her hands and feet.
When the paramedics stepped away to speak with the police, Liam walked over slowly. He stood at the open back doors of the ambulance, looking up at his wife.
The silence between them was heavier than the blizzard that was finally beginning to clear overhead.
"Nora..." Liam began, his voice barely a whisper. "I don't expect you to forgive me. What I did... what I allowed Gwen to do... it’s unforgivable."
Nora looked down at her paper cup, watching the steam rise into the cold air.
"When you locked that door, Liam," she said softly, "I felt like the floor had opened up beneath my feet. I realized that after three years of marriage, you still saw me as an outsider. You saw me as someone who could be discarded the moment a lie was spoken."
Tears dripped off Liam's chin, freezing into tiny ice beads on his jacket collar. "I was terrified of losing what little family I had left. Gwen built this monster in my head that everyone was trying to take from us. I was weak. I was a coward."
Nora turned her face toward him. The bruises of exhaustion were dark under her eyes, but her gaze was sharp, clear, and searching.
"You came looking for me," Nora said. "You came all the way to Petoskey in a blizzard. You were willing to give your life to a ghost in that cellar to save me."
"Because my life is worthless without you, Nora," Liam sobbed, dropping to his knees on the snowy pavement right outside the ambulance doors. "If you walk away today, if you take your mother's land and never look at me again, I will accept it. I deserve it. But I need you to know... I love you. I have always loved you. And I will spend every remaining day of my life trying to fix the damage I caused."
Nora looked down at him kneeling in the snow. She didn't smile, nor did she reach out to touch him.
She pulled a small object from her blanket pocket and held it out.
It was her wedding ring, cold and silver, resting in the palm of her hand.

"The ring stays off for now, Liam," Nora said quietly. "Trust isn't built with apologies. It's built with actions over time."
Liam reached up and gently closed her fingers around the ring. "I will earn it back. However long it takes."
