Chapter 19 - The Final Storm

Three weeks later, the final remnants of the storm had passed, leaving Walloon Lake covered in a pristine, blinding blanket of pure winter white. The scandal that had rocked the small township had faded into local history, replaced by the quiet rhythm of northern Michigan life.

The repair work on the timber house was completed. The shattered windows had been replaced, the fireplace restored, and the warmth inside had returned—stronger and more resilient than ever before.

In the late afternoon light, Liam stood on the wooden dock, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the snow-covered lake in shades of pink, gold, and soft lavender. He wore his simple dark sweater, his hands resting easily in his pockets.

There were no satellite phones in his pocket. No hidden ledgers in his study. No shadows waiting in the treeline.

Footsteps crunched softly behind him on the snow-covered planks. Nora walked out onto the dock, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, carrying two steaming mugs of hot cider.

She slid next to him, handing him a mug and resting her head against his shoulder. Liam wrapped a broad, warm arm around her, pulling her close against the biting cold.

"Agent Cross called this morning," Nora said quietly, a soft smile touching her lips. "The formal exoneration papers arrived from Washington. It’s officially over, Liam."

Liam looked down at her, tracing the line of her jaw with his thumb. "It’s not over, Nora. It’s just beginning."

"What is?" she asked softly, looking up into his clear, calm eyes.

"Our life," Liam replied softly. "The life where I don't have to look over my shoulder. The life where I get to spend every single morning proving to you that your faith in me was worth it."

Nora’s eyes filled with soft warmth. She took his hand—the hand bearing his silver ring—and pressed it against her abdomen, beneath the thick folds of her wool blanket.

Liam froze, his breath catching in his throat. He looked from his hand to her face, his heart hammering in a completely new way.

"Nora...?" he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and disbelief.

Nora beamed, tears of pure joy glittering in her eyes. "Dr. Vance says the baby is due in June. Right when the wildflowers bloom along the lake."

Liam fell to his knees on the snow-dusted dock, burying his face against her waist, wrapping his arms around her tightly as tears of profound gratitude spilled down his cheeks. Nora ran her fingers through his hair, laughing softly through her own tears as the sunset bathed them in warm, golden light.
