Chapter 27 - Silent Nights, Burning Doubts

Guns barked through the dense smoke, the sharp crack of gunshots muffled by the roaring flames. Bullets splintered the dry timber support beams above Liam’s head as he dived sideways behind a stack of rusted ice tongs.
The ice-house was consuming itself rapidly, the dry wood feeding a towering inferno that turned the freezing interior into an oven.
"Kill him! Get the ledger!" Arthur screamed, his cultured composure completely shattering as thick, black smoke filled his lungs.
Liam scrambled through the blinding smoke, his lungs burning. He grabbed a heavy iron ice-hook off the wall, circled around a burning partition, and struck the first gunman from behind, disarming him in a swift, brutal motion. The second guard fired blindly into the smoke, but Liam hurled the heavy iron hook, striking the man in the shoulder and knocking him backward through the flaming doorway onto the lake ice.
Arthur scrambled toward the rear exit, clutching a silver aluminum briefcase containing his escape passports and offshore bearer bonds.
Liam burst through the flaming threshold out onto the blinding white ice, his clothes singed, his face streaked with black soot. He cut off Arthur’s escape path twenty yards from the shore.
"It’s over, Arthur!" Liam shouted over the roaring fire behind them.
Arthur pulled a small, snub-nosed revolver from his coat pocket, his hands shaking violently as he aimed it at Liam’s chest. "It’s never over! I built this entire network! I won't let a ghost like you ruin my retirement!"
"Drop the weapon, Dr. Pendelton!"
A loud, authoritative voice boomed across the frozen bay.
From the pine tree line, Special Agent Victor Cross stepped out onto the ice, flanked by eight tactical FBI agents with rifles trained directly on Arthur. Walking right beside Cross, wrapped in a heavy winter coat, was Nora.
Arthur spun around in wild panic, his revolver wavering erratically between Liam and the federal law enforcement team. "Stay back! He’s a criminal! He just set fire to the evidence!"
"We heard every single word, Arthur," Agent Cross said coldly, tapping an earpiece receiver wired to his tactical vest. "Mrs. Vance didn't just bring us your ledger copies when she intercepted my team on the highway. She was wearing a concealed wire transmitter when she sent you that radio message. Every word of your confession was recorded and broadcast live to our mobile command unit."
Arthur’s eyes dilated with sheer desperation. Realizing his life, his fortune, and his freedom were destroyed, he swung his revolver back toward Liam, his finger tightening on the trigger in a final act of pure malice. "If I’m going to prison, you're going to the grave!"
