Chapter 3 - The Unspoken Truth

Andrew motioned to his bodyguard, who had just stepped through the diner doors, to secure the perimeter and keep the curious onlookers at bay. He followed Amy into the narrow, dimly lit alley behind the diner's kitchen, where the heavy rain drummed relentlessly against the rusted metal trash dumpsters.

Chloe was sitting safely inside the manager's office with a glass of juice, leaving Andrew and Amy alone in the cold drizzle.

"Tell me the truth, Amy," Andrew demanded, his corporate composure completely shattered. He stood inches away from her, the rain darkening his expensive suit, but he didn't care. "Why did you leave? You left your apartment overnight. You turned off your phone. You quit your job. I thought you were dead! And now I find out you’ve been living in poverty, raising my child in secret?"

"I had to leave!" Amy screamed back, her voice breaking as years of repressed trauma and exhaustion burst through her restraint. "You think I wanted this?! You think I wanted to raise our daughter alone, working three jobs just to buy her shoes while you were on the cover of Forbes?!"

"Then why?!" Andrew roared, his fists clenched at his sides. "I loved you! I would have given you everything!"

"Your family forced me, Andrew!" Amy cried out, the truth finally spilling into the cold air between them. Tears streamed down her face, mixing with the rain. "Your uncle, Richard. The week before I was going to tell you I was pregnant, he came to my apartment. He brought documents, Andrew. Forged bank records showing I had been selling your company's proprietary designs to competitors. He threatened to send me to federal prison for life."

Andrew stared at her, horrified, his breath catching in his throat. "What... what are you talking about?"

"He told me that if I didn't sign a confession and leave the state immediately, he would make sure I gave birth inside a prison cell and that I would never see my baby again," Amy sobbed, her shoulders shaking violently. "He had police officers waiting outside my door! He told me you knew, that you approved of it because I was just a distraction to your rising career. I was terrified, Andrew! I had no money, no lawyers, no power. I had to protect our baby!"

The revelation struck Andrew like a physical blow. He stumbled back a step, the world spinning around him. The web of lies his late father’s brother had spun, the sudden "disappearance" of key financial files seven years ago, the way Richard had so smoothly stepped into the vice-chairmanship of Callahan Global right after Amy vanished—it all fell into place with devastating clarity.

"He lied to you," Andrew whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of immense heartbreak and terrifying rage. "Amy... I swear on my life, I never knew. I spent months searching every corner of the country. I nearly ruined the company trying to find you."

He stepped forward and gently wrapped his large, warm hands around her shivering face, forcing her to look into his tear-filled eyes. "I never stopped loving you, Amy. Not for a single day."
