Chapter 5 - Chloe's World

The following days were a dizzying blur for young Chloe. Used to a small room that smelled of damp radiator steam and old carpets, she now found herself in a bright, sunlit world of glass, polished wood, and endless space.
Andrew canceled all his corporate meetings for the week, delegating his executive duties to his junior partners despite the growing unrest among the board members regarding the upcoming hospital systems contract. He devoted every waking hour to learning how to be a father.
He sat on the plush living room rug, patiently learning how to connect tiny plastic LEGO blocks to build intricate castles, letting Chloe stick glittery star stickers on his expensive suit jackets without a word of complaint.
"Daddy," Chloe said thoughtfully one afternoon, looking up from her coloring book. She had started using the word hesitantly a day ago, testing how it felt on her tongue. "Are we staying here forever? Is Mommy going to have to work at the diner anymore?"

Andrew knelt down beside her, his heart swelling with a profound tenderness he had never known existed. He took her tiny hand in his. "No, sweetheart. Mommy is never going to have to work at the diner again. And you are going to stay right here, where you are safe and loved, forever."
Amy watched the exchange from the kitchen island, holding two mugs of tea. The sight of Andrew—a man who commanded boardrooms of hundreds of cutthroat executives—sitting cross-legged on the floor playing with crayons brought tears to her eyes. Yet, deep down, she knew this peaceful sanctuary was an illusion. Richard Callahan was a powerful, ruthless man, and once he realized Andrew had found her, the full force of the Callahan corporate machine would be unleashed against them.
