Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Past

By nightfall, Andrew had arranged for a private car to take Amy and Chloe to his private residence—a heavily secured penthouse overlooking Central Park—far away from the cramped, leaking apartment in Queens where Amy had spent the last six years struggling to make ends meet.
While Amy put a exhausted, overwhelmed Chloe to bed in a room larger than their entire previous home, Andrew stood in his dark, marble-lined study. The quiet luxury of the room felt hollow, almost mocking, compared to the reality of the pain his family had inflicted on the woman he loved.
He placed a call to his most trusted security chief, Marcus, a former military intelligence officer.
"Marcus," Andrew said, his voice cold as ice. "I need every financial record, every phone log, and every encrypted message sent by Richard Callahan over the last eight years. I want an audit of all shell companies linked to his estate and his current holdings."
"Sir? Mr. Richard is still the head of the executive board," Marcus cautioned over the line. "If he detects an internal audit, he could trigger a proxy war among the shareholders."
"I don't care," Andrew replied sternly, staring out at the rain-slicked city lights below. "He stole seven years of my life. He threatened my family and forced my daughter to grow up in poverty while he lined his pockets with Callahan capital. I am going to tear his legacy down piece by piece. Start tonight."

Later that evening, Andrew walked softly into Chloe's new bedroom. The young girl was fast asleep beneath a soft down comforter, a plush teddy bear tucked securely under her arm. Andrew sat on the edge of the bed, his large hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
Amy stood in the doorway, watching him silently. For the first time in seven years, the heavy, constant weight of fear in her chest began to lift, replaced by a cautious, fragile hope.
