Chapter 10 - THE TABLE WE SHARE

Six months later.
The warm spring sun shone brightly over the spacious backyard of the Cole residence. A long wooden picnic table was set with colorful plates, fresh flowers, and dishes of home-cooked food.
Friends and neighbors gathered around to celebrate Clara’s half-birthday and the official opening of the community garden Ethan had helped design in honor of his mother Sarah.
Detective Olivia Grant sat at the table, enjoying a glass of lemonade, chatting happily with Mark about his recent promotion to chief station supervisor.
Over by the swings, nine-year-old Ethan was carefully pushing his little sister Clara in a secure toddler swing, her happy shrieks of laughter filling the afternoon air.
Rachel walked out of the kitchen bearing a large homemade cake decorated with bright yellow sunflowers.
“Food’s ready, everyone!” she called out with a warm, radiant laugh.
Ethan caught the swing gently, lifted Clara out, and walked over to the table. He stood beside Rachel, helping her set the cake in the center of the wooden table.
Mark came up behind them, wrapping his arms around both Rachel and Ethan, pulling them close as the sun beamed down through the green oak trees overhead.
Ethan looked around the table at his father, his baby sister, Detective Grant, and Rachel. The quiet fear that had once lived in his heart was completely gone, replaced by an enduring sense of safety, love, and belonging.
He reached out and squeezed Rachel’s hand tightly.
Rachel looked down at him, her eyes filled with boundless warmth. “What is it, Ethan?”
Ethan smiled, his eyes bright and clear under the spring sky.

“Nothing,” Ethan whispered softly, his voice full of peace. “I just love our family, Mom.”
Rachel’s heart overflowed as she pulled him into a warm, tender hug—a mother and son, bound not just by law or blood, but by a promise that would last forever.
