Chapter 8 - THE FIRST CRY

One week later, the doors to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Riverside Hospital opened to a warm, triumphant moment.
Baby Clara had reached her target weight, her vitals were perfect, and doctors officially cleared her for discharge.
Inside the private room, Rachel sat in a rocking chair, holding the tiny baby wrapped in a pink knitted blanket. Mark stood beside her, leaning down to kiss the top of Rachel’s head, while Ethan gently patted Clara’s tiny, soft fingers.
“She has your nose, Ethan,” Rachel smiled, looking down at the baby.
“No way,” Ethan giggled. “Her nose is way smaller!”
“She’s going to grow up knowing she has the best big brother in the world,” Mark said, wrapping his arm around Ethan’s shoulders.
Detective Olivia Grant walked into the room carrying a small plush teddy bear wearing a tiny police badge vest.
“I came to drop off a special escort,” Olivia smiled, handing the teddy bear to Ethan. “And to deliver some final paperwork.”
She handed a blue leather-bound folder to Rachel and Mark.
Inside was the officially stamped and recorded Stepparent Adoption Decree, bearing the county seal and signed by the presiding judge. Ethan’s name was listed clearly under Rachel Cole’s legal guardianship.
“It’s official,” Olivia declared proudly. “You are legally, completely, and forever a family.”
Rachel wiped away a tear of pure joy, looking up at Ethan. “How does it feel, big brother?”

Ethan looked at the adoption decree, then at the baby in Rachel’s arms, and finally at his father.
“It feels right,” Ethan said, his voice soft and happy. “It feels like home.”
