Chapter 6 - THE TRAP IS SET

While Rachel recovered in the post-operative care unit, Detective Grant finished securing the remaining forensic evidence required to solidify the state’s case against Linda Cole.

Down at the precinct, Linda’s defense attorney was already arguing that the silver spoon found in the kitchen was contaminated through normal household handling and that Linda had simply made ordinary herbal tea for her daughter-in-law.

“We need an undisputed, explicit connection between Linda and the purchase of that cardiovascular sedative,” Ben Carter said during a case conference with District Attorney Evelyn Vance.

“We found her burner phone,” Olivia replied, placing a bagged digital device on the table. “She ordered the prescription compound through an illegal offshore pharmacy network three weeks ago. The delivery tracking matches her home address.”

“That closes the loop,” DA Vance nodded firmly. “She won't see the outside of a correctional facility for the rest of her life.”

Back at the hospital, the morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden light across the recovery room.

Rachel lay propped up against soft pillows. Though still weak, her color had returned, and her breathing was soft and steady.

Mark sat on the edge of the mattress, gently holding her left hand, while Ethan stood on a small footstool beside the bed, carefully holding a small plastic cup of ice chips for her.

“Thank you,” Rachel whispered, taking a small chip of ice from Ethan with a faint smile. “You were so brave last night, Ethan. You saved my life.”

Ethan looked down at his shoes, feeling his face get warm. “I’m sorry I threw away all those sticky notes in my lunchbox.”

Rachel reached out, her fingers warm and soft as she gently touched Ethan’s cheek. “You don't ever have to apologize for missing your mom, Ethan. I never wanted you to stop loving her.”

“I know,” Ethan said, looking up into her eyes. “I read the letter. And... I saw the picture of you and Mom on the beach.”

Rachel’s eyes shone with deep affection. “She loved you more than the whole world, Ethan. And every time I look at you, I see her bright, kind spirit.”

Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out the white folder he had taken from the blue bag hours ago—the Stepparent Adoption Petition.

He laid it carefully on the tray table over Rachel’s lap.

“Ethan?” Mark asked softly, surprised.

Ethan picked up a black ballpoint pen from the bedside table and handed it to Rachel.

“There’s a line on page three,” Ethan said quietly, pointing to the bottom of the form where it said Child’s Consent (if over 8 years old). “I want to sign it now.”
