Chapter 7 - A CONFRONTATION OF LIES

Three days later.

The preliminary court hearing for Linda Cole took place at the Franklin County Judicial Center.

Linda sat at the defense table in a bright orange jumpsuit, her hands restrained by a belly chain. Her defense lawyer leaned in to whisper to her, but Linda kept her eyes fixed on the doors at the back of the courtroom.

The doors opened, and Mark Cole walked in, holding Ethan’s hand on his right, and pushing Rachel’s wheelchair with his left.

Rachel wore a simple cream cardigan over a floral dress, her face glowing with quiet strength. A small heart-rate monitor tag was visible on her wrist, but her posture was steady and erect.

Gasps rippled through the gallery as the family walked in together, presenting an unbroken, united front.

Linda’s lawyer stood up, attempting to request a continuance based on emotional distress, but District Attorney Vance stepped forward immediately.

“Your Honor,” DA Vance announced, filing a stack of certified documents with the clerk. “The State submits complete digital records, chemical analysis reports, and sworn testimony from emergency medical personnel. The evidence demonstrates a calculated, cold-blooded attempt on the lives of Rachel Cole and her unborn infant.”

The judge reviewed the documents, her brow furrowing with deep severity as she read the toxicology results and the intercepted transaction logs from Linda’s burner phone.

She looked down over her glasses at Linda Cole.

“Mrs. Cole,” the judge declared, her voice cold as steel. “The evidence presented against you shows a shocking betrayal of familial trust motivated by financial greed and malicious manipulation. Bail is denied. You will remain in custody pending full trial proceedings.”

Linda stood up abruptly, her chains clanking loudly. “Mark! Look at me! You’re letting these strangers destroy your mother!”

Mark stopped at the exit doors, turning around to face her one last time.

“Nobody destroyed you, Mom,” Mark said clearly, his voice echoing across the silent courtroom. “You destroyed yourself. And we are finally free of your lies.”

Without another word, Mark turned the wheelchair around and pushed Rachel out into the bright afternoon sunlight, leaving Linda alone with her heavy chains and her bitter silence.
