Chapter 3 - THE COLD POISON

By 4:30 AM, the investigation shifted into high gear at the precinct. Detective Grant stood before a white dry-erase board covered in crime scene photos, financial charts, and phone records.

Officer Ben Carter walked into the briefing room holding a stack of bank statements. “Detective, we just ran Linda Cole’s credit history. It’s worse than we thought. She has over $80,000 in high-interest unsecured debt, and her home is facing foreclosure proceedings next month.”

“And the trust fund?” Olivia asked.

“Sarah Cole’s estate trust explicitly states that the designated guardian of Ethan Cole receives a $3,500 monthly stipend for his care and housing until he turns eighteen,” Ben explained. “When Sarah died, Linda managed to get temporary administrative control over the trust payouts because Mark was working double shifts. But the moment Rachel’s stepparent adoption petition goes through, legal guardianship transfers entirely to Rachel—and Linda loses every cent.”

Olivia pointed to a photo of the silver spoon on the board. “She wasn't just trying to drive a wedge between Ethan and Rachel. When she realized the adoption papers were filed this week, she panicked. She decided to eliminate Rachel and the unborn child in one quiet stroke, making it look like a tragic pregnancy complication.”

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Ethan sat by the large glass window of the ICU, looking in at Rachel. She lay motionless under the sterile white blankets, surrounded by clear tubing and the steady, rhythmic monitor lines tracing her pulse.

Mark walked up behind his son, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.

“Dad?” Ethan whispered without looking away from the glass.

“Yeah, pal?”

“Why did Grandma do it?”

Mark swallowed hard, his heart breaking for the boy. “Sometimes, Ethan... people let fear and greed make them dark inside. They tell lies to cover up their own mistakes until they can’t see the truth anymore.”

Ethan pulled the folded letter out of his pocket. “Rachel didn't hate my mom. She loved her. Why did Grandma say those mean things?”

“Because Grandma wanted you to feel lonely,” Mark admitted, tears stinging his eyes as he knelt beside Ethan’s chair. “She wanted you to depend only on her so she could keep control. I should have seen it, Ethan. I was working so many hours... I thought I was protecting us, but I left you alone with that poison. I’m so sorry.”

Ethan wrapped his arms around his father’s neck, hugging him tightly. “It’s okay, Dad. But we have to help Rachel now.”

“We will,” Mark swore softly, looking into the ICU room. “I promise you, we will.”

At that moment, the hallway elevator chimed. The double doors slid open, and Linda Cole stepped out into the lobby, carrying a plastic container of homemade soup and wearing an expression of innocent, dramatic concern.

“Mark!” Linda cried out, hurrying down the hallway toward them, her eyes wide with manufactured grief. “Oh my goodness, Mark! I just heard from the neighbors! What happened to poor Rachel?”
