Chapter 4 - A MOTHER’S LEGACY

Mark stood up slowly, turning to face his mother. His posture was rigid, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
Linda reached out to clutch Mark’s arm, but he took a deliberate step backward, out of her reach.
“Mom,” Mark said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “What are you doing here?”
Linda paused, her maternal mask flickering for a split second before she smoothed her coat down. “What do you mean? I heard Rachel was rushed to the hospital! I came as fast as I could! Is the baby okay?”
Ethan stepped out from behind his father, holding the worn beach photograph straight out in front of him.
“You said Rachel didn't know my mom,” Ethan said, his young voice trembling with righteous anger. “You said she was a stranger who stole my dad.”
Linda’s eyes darted down to the photograph, her face momentarily draining of color. “Ethan, sweetie, what are you talking about? Put that away—”
“This is a picture of my mom and Rachel!” Ethan shouted, his tears finally turning into anger. “They were best friends! Rachel promised my mom she would take care of me!”
Linda’s demeanor hardened, her sympathetic look collapsing into a sharp, bitter grimace. She turned her glare toward Mark. “Did you let him read those ridiculous delusions? Rachel has been filling that boy’s head with lies ever since she moved in! She’s trying to erase Sarah’s memory, Mark, and you’re just letting her do it!”
“The only person who tried to erase Sarah’s memory is you, Mom,” Mark said, his voice shaking with restrained fury. “Sarah left a video diary for Ethan on a drive in her safety deposit box. I unlocked it two hours ago with the detective.”
Linda went completely still.
“Sarah spoke about you on that video, Mom,” Mark continued, stepping closer to her, forcing her to back up against the corridor wall. “She said she was worried about your gambling debts. She said she was afraid you would try to use Ethan’s trust fund if anything ever happened to her. That’s why she named Rachel as her alternate trustee—not you.”
Linda gasped, her hand going to her throat. “That... that’s a lie! Sarah loved me! I took care of this family!”
“You poisoned my wife!” Mark roared, the full weight of his pain bursting through the quiet hospital corridor. “You put sedatives in her tea while my nine-year-old son was in the next room! You tried to kill my baby!”
From the far end of the hallway, Detective Grant and two uniformed officers stepped out of the service stairwell, their boots clicking firmly against the floor.
“Linda Cole,” Olivia announced, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, dangerous administration of a controlled substance, and child endangerment.”
Linda stumbled back, her eyes darting wildly toward the elevator. “Mark! Tell them they’re wrong! I did it for you! I did it to keep our real family together!”

“You are not my family anymore,” Mark said coldly, turning his back on her as the officers stepped in and secured her wrists behind her back.
As Linda was escorted away, screaming excuses into the empty hall, Ethan gripped his father’s hand. The air in the corridor felt lighter, as if a dark shadow that had hung over the Cole household for years had finally been lifted.
