Chapter 1 - The Morning After

The luxury hotel suite on the top floor of the Grand Regency was silent, save for the quiet breathing of three-year-old Noah sleeping peacefully on the plush king-sized bed. I sat by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the sunrise paint the skyline in shades of amber and gold. For the first time in four years, my chest didn't feel constricted. The suffocating weight of protecting Daniel’s fragile male ego was gone.
At 8:00 AM sharp, my phone screen lit up. It was Arthur Vance, my senior corporate counsel and chief legal advisor for my late father’s estate.
"Good morning, ma'am," Arthur’s voice came through, crisp and unflappable. "I assume you are no longer in residence at the Hawthorne estate?"
"I left last night, Arthur," I said, my voice steady. "With Noah. Daniel gave me an ultimatum—apologize to his mother or pack my things. I chose my dignity."
Arthur let out a quiet, dry chuckle. "A monumental mistake on his part. I have already served the initial notice to Mr. Daniel Hawthorne's personal email, as well as the management firm handling the estate. His private line has pinged my office four times in the last twenty minutes."
"Call him," I said quietly. "Let him hear it from you."
Three miles away, inside the master suite of the Hawthorne estate, Daniel was nursing a hangover and a bruised ego. He had spent the night convincing his mother that I would come crawling back by noon.
When his phone rang with an official private line caller ID, he answered with smug confidence. "Look, if this is about my wife—"
"Mr. Daniel Hawthorne?" Arthur Vance’s tone was ice-cold legal precision. "My name is Arthur Vance of Vance, Sterling & Partners. I am representing your wife in the immediate dissolution of your marriage, as well as the total recovery of all corporate and real estate assets."
Daniel scoffed, sitting up in bed. " Dissolution? Is this a joke? Tell her to stop playing games. She walked out on me. She took my Porsche!"
"Mr. Hawthorne, I suggest you listen very carefully," Arthur interrupted, his tone chillingly calm. "The 2025 Porsche Panamera your wife drove away in last night is registered under Vanguard Global Holdings—a parent entity owned 100% by your wife. Furthermore, the Hawthorne estate, the ground it stands on, and the holding company that paid off your father’s twelve-million-dollar debt three years ago are entirely owned by Vanguard."
Daniel’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about? My father’s estate was saved by an anonymous venture backer..."
May you like
"Your wife was that backer, Mr. Hawthorne," Arthur replied smoothly. "She allowed you to sign as the managing administrator to preserve your public standing. However, effective as of 6:00 AM today, your administrative privileges have been revoked. You, your mother, and your extended family have seventy-two hours to vacate the premises."
The phone slid from Daniel’s fingers, crashing onto the hardwood floor.
