Chapter 2 - The Illusion Crumbles

By noon, the atmosphere at the Hawthorne estate had shifted from celebratory arrogance to total panic. Margaret Hawthorne was sitting in the grand drawing room, sipping tea from porcelain cups that didn't belong to her, when Daniel entered the room, pale as a ghost.
"Daniel, darling," Margaret preened, adjusting her pearls. "Have you called that ungrateful woman yet? She needs to bring Noah back immediately. And she owes me a formal apology in front of the entire family."
"Mom," Daniel choked out, his hands trembling. "Stop talking."
"What did you say to me?" Margaret gasped, looking around at her daughter, Victoria, and son, Julian, who were lounging on the silk sofas.
"The house," Daniel whispered, sinking into a chair. "It’s not mine."
Victoria laughed mockingly. "Daniel, stop joking. You bought this place back after Dad died. You’ve been paying the staff, the maintenance, the taxes—"
"With her money!" Daniel erupted, slamming his fist onto the coffee table. "Every cent came from an account managed by Vanguard Global! I thought it was a joint venture fund set up for my business! But it’s her private inheritance holding company!"
Before Margaret could process the revelation, a black SUV pulled up to the main gates. Two men in sharp dark suits stepped out, accompanied by an officer of the county sheriff's department.
They walked up the terrace steps—the very spot where twelve hours earlier, Daniel had demanded I apologize—and knocked sharply on the heavy oak doors.
Daniel opened the door, his heart pounding in his throat.
"Daniel Hawthorne?" the sheriff asked, confirming his identity. "We are serving you with an emergency order of exclusive occupancy, an asset preservation injunction, and an eviction notice for all non-registered residents of this property."
Margaret rushed to the door, her face red with fury. "This is an outrage! Do you know who we are? My husband built this family's name!"

"Ma'am," the sheriff replied dispassionately, "the deed on file with the county belongs to Vanguard Global. The owner has requested immediate possession. You have seventy-two hours to remove your personal belongings. All vehicles on the property, with the exception of one leased sedan under Mr. Hawthorne's name, have been immobilized by satellite tracking."
Julian ran to the garage and pressed the start button on Daniel's beloved Range Rover. The dashboard flashed a red message: ACCESS DENIED - PROPERTY OF VANGUARD GLOBAL.
