Chapter 6 - The Custody Trial

The emergency custody hearing took place in the grand family court downtown.

Daniel sat at the defense table alongside his high-priced family lawyer—a lawyer he was paying using borrowed money from distant relatives. Margaret sat in the gallery behind him, looking pale and nervous as the public tide turned against them.

I sat with Arthur, dressed impeccably, calm and composed.

Daniel’s lawyer stood up, attempting a desperate character assassination. "Your Honor, my client’s wife deliberately concealed her immense wealth to create a power dynamic of financial control in the marriage. She calculatedly stripped my client of his home and career overnight, creating an unstable, vindictive environment for three-year-old Noah!"

The judge, a formidable woman with sharp eyes, looked over her glasses at Daniel's lawyer. "Counselor, did your client not issue an explicit ultimatum telling his wife to leave the home?"

"It was... an argument in the heat of the moment, Your Honor!" the lawyer stammered.

Arthur Vance stood up gracefully. "Your Honor, we submit into evidence the financial records showing that Mr. Daniel Hawthorne was never the owner of the Hawthorne estate, nor was he the founder of his logistics enterprise. Mrs. Catherine Sterling funded his lifestyle completely. More importantly, we submit medical records, nanny logs, and child psychology reports demonstrating that Noah has thrived exclusively under his mother's care."

Arthur stepped forward, placing a final document on the bench. "Furthermore, we present evidence that Mr. Hawthorne’s family has repeatedly subjected Noah to emotional distress by using him as a bargaining chip."

The judge reviewed the files for several long, agonizing minutes. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the ticking of the wall clock.

Finally, the judge looked down at Daniel.

"Mr. Hawthorne," the judge said sternly. "Marriage is built on mutual respect, not deception and intimidation. You attempted to cast your wife out into the street with nothing, assuming she had no power. Finding out she possessed the power all along does not make her vindictive—it makes you negligent."

The judge slammed her gavel down. "Temporary sole physical and legal custody is awarded to the mother, Catherine Sterling. The father is granted supervised visitation once every two weeks at a court-designated center. Child support and alimony claims by the husband are denied in full."

Daniel slumped forward, head in his hands, as Margaret let out an audible gasp of horror.
