Chapter 7 - The Hawthorne Collapse

With the custody battle lost and the public exposure total, the Hawthorne family began to tear itself apart from the inside.

Without my financial safety net, the reality of their living situation hit hard. Daniel’s brother, Julian, who had spent years living rent-free off the corporate allowance I provided, demanded his share of their remaining personal savings. His sister, Victoria, blamed Margaret for pushing me too far.

"If you had just kept your mouth shut about Noah’s food!" Victoria screamed at her mother in their cramped apartment living room. "If you hadn't demanded she apologize, we would still be living in the mansion! We would still have the cars!"

"How dare you!" Margaret shrieked back, her face contorted with bitterness. "I was maintaining our family's pride! She was supposed to be obedient!"

"Pride doesn't pay the rent, Mom!" Daniel yelled, entering the room with a stack of overdue bills. "I’m blacklisted from executive corporate roles! No firm in the city will hire me after the Apex scandal! I'm ruined!"

In a desperate bid to save himself, Daniel drove to my corporate headquarters late one evening. He waited in the underground parking garage, standing near my private elevator bay.

When I stepped out of the elevator, flanked by two private security guards, Daniel rushed forward.

"Catherine! Please! Just talk to me!" he pleaded, his clothes rumpled, his hair unkempt.

The security guards immediately stepped in front of him, but I raised my hand, stopping them.

"You have two minutes, Daniel," I said cold and emotionless.

"Catherine, I'm sorry," Daniel wept, dropping to his knees on the concrete floor. "I was blind! My mother manipulated me! She always hated how smart and capable you were! I was weak, I was proud, but I love you! I love Noah! Please, let us come home. I’ll do anything."

I looked down at the man who had once been the center of my life. I felt no anger, no hatred, no desire for revenge. I felt only a cold, profound emptiness.

"You didn't care when you thought I was helpless, Daniel," I said softly. "You only care now because you realize you are. You didn't love me—you loved the status I gave you. Stand up. You're embarrassing yourself."

I turned and walked toward my car, leaving him kneeling on the concrete floor, sobbing into the quiet darkness.
