Chapter 3 - Shadows Over the Waterfront

The news of the civil lawsuit spilled into the Boston business community like oil onto clean water. Within forty-eight hours, local business journals began publishing sensational headlines: VANCE ESTATE FILES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SUIT AGAINST FORMER WIFE AND DAUGHTER’S DESIGN FIRM.
The effect on the new studio was immediate and brutal.
Maya stood in the center of the studio, looking at her laptop screen. An email had just arrived from the lead project manager of the Boston Harbor Waterfront Revitalization Project—the massive commercial contract that had launched her business.
Dear Miss Lin, In light of the ongoing civil litigation involving claims of tortious interference and corporate asset disputes, our legal steering committee has voted to place your design contract on an indefinite administrative hold. We cannot risk building plans being tied up in court injunctions.
Maya felt as though the wind had been knocked out of her chest. This single contract represented sixty percent of their projected revenue for the entire year.
Before she could process the blow, the glass door opened. But it wasn't a client. It was Ethan Cross—a brilliant, thirty-year-old structural engineer who had been working closely with Maya on the structural foundations for the waterfront project.
"Maya," Ethan said, his dark eyes filled with concern as he walked in, setting a roll of architectural drawings on her table. "I just heard about the developer’s hold."
"It happened ten minutes ago," Maya said, rubbing her temples. "They’re terrified of getting dragged into the Vance family drama."
Ethan stepped closer, his presence warm and grounding. Over the past three months, Ethan had become more than just a trusted professional colleague; he had become a quiet, steadfast pillar of support in Maya’s life. Unlike the toxic, controlling men Maya had been forced to navigate in the past, Ethan was honest, deeply respectful, and unflappable.
"The developer is making a massive mistake," Ethan said firmly. "Your design for the waterfront plaza is the most innovative environmental concept this city has seen in a decade. They know it."
"It doesn't matter how good the design is if Julian Vance can freeze our bank accounts with legal filings," Maya said, leaning against the edge of the table.
"Julian Vance isn't invincible, Maya," Ethan said softly, reaching out and gently placing his hand over hers. Maya looked down at their joined hands, feeling an immediate sense of calm wash over her. "I spoke with my firm's executive board this morning. We’re not pulling out. Cross Engineering is standing by Lin & Vance Design. If the developer drops you, we drop the developer."
Maya looked up at Ethan, her eyes shining with emotion. "Ethan... you can't risk your firm’s reputation for us. This project is huge for your team."
"It’s not a risk," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a low, intense register. "It’s a stance. You stood up to a monster and won, Maya. Watching you build this studio, watching your strength... it made me realize what kind of people I want to build a future with. We are in this together."
Elena walked out from the back office, having overheard Ethan's words. A gentle, knowing smile touched her lips as she looked between her daughter and the young engineer.
"Thank you, Ethan," Elena said softly. "In our old life, men like the Vances used their power to isolate us. Having allies who refuse to run makes all the difference."
Ethan turned to Elena with a respectful nod. "We’re not running, Mrs. Vance. In fact, my father used to work with the state licensing board. He told me something interesting about Julian Vance’s private equity firm last night."
Maya straightened up. "What did he say?"
"Julian’s firm, Vance Global Capital, is currently undergoing a confidential audit by the Massachusetts Port Authority regarding commercial land acquisitions near the harbor," Ethan revealed, lowering his voice. "If Julian is using corporate capital from Vance Global to finance David’s personal civil lawsuit against you, he might be committing a massive breach of federal SEC regulations."

Maya’s eyes narrowed as the pieces began to shift on the chessboard. "He’s using company money to fight a personal vendetta."
"And if we can prove it," Ethan smiled, "Marcus Thorne won't just defeat their civil suit. He can destroy Julian's financial empire."
