Chapter 7 - A House Divided

While Maya was finding her footing in the safety of her mother’s home, a very different kind of tension was fracturing the Vance mansion in Beacon Hill. The pristine image that Rebecca and Richard had spent decades cultivating was beginning to show deep, structural cracks.
Despite Richard's best efforts to suppress the media, a local investigative journalist had obtained a copy of the police report through a public records request. The headline on the front page of the Boston Chronicle was devastating: Prominent Corporate Attorney Arrested for Public Domestic Assault at Luxury Restaurant.
"Look at this!" Rebecca screamed, slamming the newspaper onto the mahogany dining table where David sat silently staring into a glass of whiskey. "Our name is being dragged through the gutter! I can't even go to the country club without hearing the staff whispering behind my back! This is all because you couldn't control yourself in public, David!"
"Me?!" David snapped, his voice tight and defensive as he slammed his glass down. "You’re the one who told me to put her in her place! You’ve been telling me for years that I was letting her walk all over me because she was working and paying the mortgage! You clapped, Mother! You clapped while I did it!"
"Enough, both of you!" Richard roared, walking into the room with his briefcase in hand, his face pale with a mixture of rage and anxiety. "The senior partners at the firm just called an emergency meeting. They are placing David on an indefinite administrative leave. The corporate clients don't want a domestic abuser managing their mergers. If we don't fix this at the preliminary hearing next week, David, you won't just lose your marriage—you will lose your license to practice law."
David’s breath hitched. His entire identity was tied to his status, his wealth, and his power over others. The thought of losing his career, of being cast out of the elite circles he had occupied his entire life, sent a wave of cold terror through his chest.

"What do we do, Dad?" David asked, his voice suddenly sounding small, like that of a child looking for an escape from a mess he had created.
"We destroy her credibility completely," Richard said coldly, his eyes narrowing. "I’ve hired a private investigation firm. They’ve been tracking Maya and her mother. We found out that Elena’s small dry-cleaning business had some financial irregularities five years ago—a simple tax accounting error, but we can frame it as fraud. We will use that to show that Maya and her mother are grifters who targeted our family for financial gain. When I am done with them on the witness stand, no judge in this city will believe a single word that comes out of their mouths."
