Chapter 9 - The Verdict of Society

The courtroom lights dimmed, and the large monitor on the wall came to life. The video was clear, captured by a hidden camera in the hallway of David and Maya’s home.

The gallery watched in stunned, horrified silence as David’s voice filled the room—loud, vicious, and dripping with contempt. “You’re nothing without me, Maya! Look at this apartment! Look at your pathetic little career! If I see you talking to your mother again without my permission, I will make sure you don't have a roof over your head by morning!” The video showed him throwing a heavy ceramic vase against the wall just inches from where Maya stood trembling, her hands over her ears exactly as she had done in the restaurant.

Rebecca closed her eyes, unable to look at the screen as the evidence of her son’s true nature was laid bare for the judge and the press to see. Richard Vance sat frozen, his legal mind instantly recognizing that no amount of corporate influence could save his son from this footage.

The judge’s face was a mask of cold fury as the video ended and the lights came back on. She looked down at David, who was now slumping in his chair, his head buried in his hands.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Margaret said, her voice cutting through the courtroom like a scalpel. "In my fifteen years on the bench, I have rarely seen such a disgusting display of systematic cruelty and cowardice. The defense’s motion for dismissal is denied. In light of the severe nature of the evidence presented today, I am revoking your bail immediately. You will be remanded to custody until the formal trial date."

"Your Honor, please!" Bradley Vance argued, but the judge raised her hand, silencing him instantly.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "I am issuing a permanent, lifetime restraining order against the defendant and his immediate family on behalf of Mrs. Maya Vance and Mrs. Elena Lin. Any violation of this order will result in immediate federal charges. Court is adjourned."

The sound of the gavel striking the wood sounded like a thunderclap. Two bailiffs stepped behind David, forcing him to stand and guiding his arms behind his back to place him in handcuffs once again. This time, there would be no signature bond. There would be no quick release arranged by his father.

As David was led through the side door toward the holding cells, he looked back at Maya one last time. But Maya wasn't looking at him with fear anymore. She was standing tall, her head held high, looking at him with nothing but profound, liberating pity.
