Chapter 5 - The Wealthy Predator’s Response

By nine o'clock the following morning, the fallout from the restaurant incident began to manifest with terrifying speed. David’s father, Richard Vance—a powerful corporate attorney with deep political connections in New England—had secured his son's release on a signature bond within hours of the arrest. The Vance family machine had immediately swung into motion, working frantically to suppress the story before it could reach the local media outlets.
Elena sat at her small kitchen table, a mug of black coffee cooling between her hands, while Maya slept fitfully in the guest bedroom down the hall. The peace of the morning was shattered by the sharp ringing of Elena’s landline. She picked it up on the second ring.
"Elena," a deep, patronizing voice boomed through the receiver. It was Richard Vance. He didn't bother with greetings. "We need to handle this situation immediately before it inflicts any further damage on my son’s professional standing. I have drafted a non-disclosure agreement and a formal retraction statement for Maya to sign. We will state that the incident was a manifestation of a medical episode and that David was merely trying to prevent her from harming herself."
Elena let out a short, bitter laugh. "You truly are a despicable piece of work, Richard. Your son dragged my daughter by her hair in front of a hundred witnesses, and your first instinct is to paint her as mentally unstable to save his partnership at the firm?"
"I am being practical, Elena," Richard replied, his tone turning dangerously cold. "If this goes to trial, we will tie Maya up in litigation for years. We will audit her bank accounts, we will bring up every minor argument they’ve ever had, and we will destroy her career as an interior designer by ensuring no high-end client in Boston ever hires her again. She will be broke, blacklisted, and utterly ruined. Sign the retraction, let David attend a few private counseling sessions, and we can put this unfortunate night behind us."

"Let me make something perfectly clear to you, Richard," Elena said, her voice rising with a ferocious, protective energy. "For three years, I stayed quiet because Maya begged me to keep the peace. I watched your son systematically dismantle her self-esteem, isolate her from her friends, and treat her like a piece of property. That ends today. We are not signing your retractions. We are not accepting your bribes. If you want a war, Richard, you’ve got one. But you should know something—I have lived through far worse things than a wealthy bully in a expensive suit."
Before Richard could respond, Elena slammed the phone back onto its cradle. Her hands were shaking, not from fear, but from a profound, burning rage. She knew the Vance family had immense resources, but she also knew something they didn't: a mother fighting for her child’s life is the most dangerous force on earth.
