Chapter 9 - Promises Under the Stars

Later that evening, after the formal speeches and dinner had concluded, the gala transitioned into a night of music and celebration.
Maya slipped away from the bustling crowd, stepping out onto the private observation deck overlooking the harbor. The cool night air was refreshing against her skin. Below, the gentle waves of the Atlantic lapped against the stone pier, reflecting the shimmering city lights of Boston.
A moment later, she heard footsteps on the wooden deck. Ethan walked out, holding two glasses of sparkling cider.
"I thought I might find you out here," Ethan said softly, stepping up beside her and handing her a glass.
"It’s breathtaking, isn't it?" Maya asked, looking out at the dark horizon. "Everything feels so peaceful tonight."
Ethan set his glass down on the wooden railing and turned to face her. The warm glow from the pavilion’s glass walls cast soft highlights across his face.
"Maya," Ethan said, his voice unusually nervous, though filled with a deep, resolute tenderness.
Maya turned to him, noticing the intensity in his dark eyes. "Ethan? What is it?"
Ethan reached into his tuxedo jacket pocket and pulled out a small, mahogany box. He took a deep breath, looking down at her with a love so profound it brought a warm flush to her cheeks.
"From the moment I met you at that construction site, I knew you were extraordinary," Ethan said softly, holding the box in his hands. "I watched you fight for your mother, for your business, and for your truth. You built an amazing life out of chaos, Maya. And every single day I spend with you makes me want to be a better man, a better builder, and a better partner."
Ethan slowly sank down onto one knee on the wooden deck. He opened the mahogany box, revealing a stunning, ethically sourced ethical diamond ring set in a polished platinum band designed to look like interwoven olive branches.
"Maya Lin," Ethan said, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "Will you do me the honor of building the rest of our lives together? Will you marry me?"
Maya gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Tears of overwhelming happiness welled up in her eyes, reflecting the starlight above. She looked at the ring, then down at the wonderful, brave, honorable man kneeling before her—a man who had stood by her side through legal storms, financial threats, and chaos without ever flinching.
"Yes," Maya whispered, her voice overflowing with joy. "Yes, Ethan! Absolutely yes!"

Ethan let out a breath of pure relief and joy. He stood up, sliding the platinum ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close, and lifted her slightly off her feet as his lips found hers in a deep, passionate kiss.
High above them, the stars shone bright and clear over Boston Harbor, witnessing a love built not on control or fear, but on freedom, trust, and mutual devotion.
