Chapter 8 - The Truth in Black and White

The morning of the preliminary hearing arrived, accompanied by a biting New England frost that coated the steps of the Boston Municipal Court. The hallway outside the courtroom was a chaotic scene of reporters, photographers, and legal aides.

When David arrived, flanked by his parents and a team of three defense attorneys, he looked polished, confident, and completely detached from the reality of his actions. He wore a dark navy suit, his hair perfectly coiffed, a stark contrast to the pale, anxious young woman who arrived a few minutes later accompanied by Elena and Sarah Jenkins.

As they passed each other in the corridor, David leaned in slightly toward Maya, his voice a low, mocking whisper. "It’s not too late to drop this, Maya. Sign the papers, or your mother’s little business is going to be destroyed before lunch."

Maya didn't flinch. She kept her eyes fixed ahead, her hand gripped firmly in Elena’s.

Inside the courtroom, the air was heavy with anticipation. Judge Margaret Vance (no relation to the defendant, though Richard had tried unsuccessfully to leverage the shared name for recusal) called the court to order.

Richard’s lead defense attorney, a ruthless man named Bradley Vance, stepped to the podium. "Your Honor, we move for an immediate dismissal of all charges. The defense has clear evidence that the alleged victim and her mother have a history of financial instability and have orchestrated this public incident to extort a massive divorce settlement from my client. We have financial records indicating that Mrs. Elena Lin has engaged in fraudulent business practices in the past."

A murmur went through the gallery. Rebecca smiled with quiet satisfaction from the front row, confident that the trap had been sprung perfectly.

Sarah Jenkins stood up slowly, her expression entirely unbothered. "Your Honor, the defense’s attempt to defame my client's mother is not only completely irrelevant to a criminal assault charge, but it is also based on a completely fabricated narrative. Furthermore, we would like to submit a new piece of evidence into the record—evidence that was obtained legally through a subpoena of the defendant’s personal computer and smart-home security logs."

Sarah walked over to the evidence table and handed a flash drive to the bailiff. "For the past two years, Mr. Vance had a security system installed in their private residence. He told his wife it was for her protection. What he didn't realize is that the system automatically backed up all audio and video logs to an encrypted cloud server."

David’s face instantly lost all its color. He turned to his father, his lips moving soundlessly as panic gripped his throat.

"We have selected three specific recordings from the past six months, Your Honor," Sarah continued, her voice echoing clearly through the courtroom. "Recordings that demonstrate a clear, consistent pattern of extreme emotional abuse, financial coercion, and physical intimidation that culminated in the assault at The Copper Lantern. I ask that the court view the first exhibit."
