Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Law

The blue and red lights of three police cruisers reflected violently against the frosted glass windows of The Copper Lantern just six minutes later. The rhythmic, pulsing glow illuminated the faces of the onlookers who had gathered near the entrance, their hushed whispers filling the restaurant like the buzzing of angry hornets. Two uniform officers marched through the double doors, their heavy boots clicking against the hardwood floor, followed closely by a seasoned detective in a trench coat whose sharp eyes immediately locked onto the tense tableau at the center table.
"BPD. We received a report of an ongoing domestic assault," the lead officer announced, his hand resting casually but purposefully near his holster. "Who is the caller?"
"I am," Elena said, raising her hand slightly while keeping her other arm firmly anchored around Maya. "My name is Elena Lin. My daughter, Maya Vance, was just physically assaulted by her husband, David Vance, who is standing right there."
Before the officer could ask a follow-up question, Rebecca stood up, her face twisted into an expression of practiced, aristocratic distress. "Officer, please, this is a massive exaggeration born out of a family grudge. My son merely tried to guide his wife back into her seat after she became hysterical. It was a clumsy gesture, nothing more. There was absolutely no assault."
The detective, whose badge identified him as Detective Miller, stepped forward, completely ignoring Rebecca’s theatrical display. He looked directly at Maya, noting the redness near the roots of her hair where David’s fingers had gripped her, and the smeared makeup on her tear-streaked cheeks. "Ma'am, I need to hear from you. Did this man pull your hair and assault you?"
Maya froze. The weight of the moment felt immense. She looked at David, who was staring at her with a look that was a terrifying mixture of a plea and a silent threat. For three years, that look had kept her silent. It was the look that reminded her of his financial control, his ability to twist words, and his promise that if she ever left him, he would ruin her reputation and ensure she left with absolutely nothing.
"Maya, tell them the truth," David muttered, his voice laced with a subtle, manipulative tremor. "Tell them we were just having an argument about the house. Tell them it was an accident."
"Sir, step back and keep your mouth shut," Detective Miller snapped, stepping into David’s personal space. "If you say another word to the victim, I will have you in handcuffs for witness intimidation before we even discuss the assault charge."
Elena leaned down, her lips brushing against Maya’s ear. "You don’t have to protect him anymore, sweetheart. The world sees him for exactly what he is now. Look around. You are not alone."
Maya raised her head slowly, her amber-flecked eyes shifting from her mother to the crowded room. She saw the looks of deep pity and disgust on the faces of total strangers. She saw the security guards standing like sentinels, ready to protect her. For the first time in her married life, the paralyzing fog of fear began to lift, replaced by a spark of raw, long-buried dignity.

"He pulled my hair," Maya said, her voice trembling initially but gaining strength with every syllable. "He dragged me backward. He told me he wanted to shame me because I didn’t know my place. He... he has done things like this before, but never where people could see."
"That's enough," Detective Miller nodded firmly. He turned to the uniform officers. "Turn him around. Arrest him for domestic assault and battery."
