Chapter 2 - The Sound of Accountability

The silence in the room was brittle, a thin pane of glass waiting to shatter. At exactly 2:00 p.m., the front doors of the Vance estate didn't just open—they were effectively blown off their hinges.
The heavy thud of boots hitting the marble floor echoed through the mansion, followed by the authoritative, rhythmic shouting of federal agents. "FBI! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"
Julian’s face, which had been twisted in a sneer of triumph only seconds ago, drained of color. He turned, his arm still around Chloe, and for the first time in his pampered, golden-boy life, I saw the exact moment he realized he was no longer the most powerful man in the room.
"What is this?" Arthur Vance bellowed, stepping forward, his chest puffed out with the arrogance of a man who believed he owned the law. "This is private property! Who authorized this?"
A woman with a badge on a lanyard and a tactical vest stepped into the center of the wreckage. She didn't look at Arthur. She didn't look at the trembling guests. She looked at me, lying on the floor, my hands shielding my stomach.
"Clara Vance?" the agent asked, her voice sharp.
"I’m here," I rasped, wincing as I tried to sit up.
The agent’s eyes flickered with something between professional empathy and cold, hard validation. "We have the warrants. We have everything you sent us. You’re coming with us, and you’re going to the hospital first."
Julian took a step toward the agent, his voice regaining some of his usual haughty condescension. "You can't do this. Do you know who I am? Do you know who my father is?"
The agent didn't even flinch. She signaled to two officers behind her. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for money laundering, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. And based on what we just witnessed, add domestic battery to that list."
"Battery?" Chloe shrieked, her voice high and grating. "She fell! It was an accident!"
The agent turned to look at Chloe, her expression icy. "We have high-definition audio and video surveillance covering this entire room, ma’am. I suggest you stay very quiet."
As the officers swarmed the room, grabbing Arthur and Julian, the sheer absurdity of it struck me. The guests, the socialites who had come to toast to a "real heir," were now scrambling toward the exits, desperate to disassociate themselves from the imploding Vance empire.
Arthur was screaming, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple as they zip-tied his wrists. He looked back at me, his eyes wide with a mix of fury and disbelief. "You! You little rat! We gave you everything!"
"You gave me a front-row seat to your downfall," I whispered, though he couldn't hear me over the chaos.
They lifted me carefully onto a stretcher. As I was wheeled toward the door, I passed Julian. He was pinned against the wall, his expensive suit rumpled, his hair disheveled. He looked at me, and for the first time, I didn't see the man I had fallen in love with. I saw a small, pathetic shadow.

"Clara, please!" he hissed, his voice cracking. "Tell them it’s a mistake! We can work this out, just tell them!"
I looked at him, feeling a wave of cold detachment. "There’s nothing to work out, Julian. The baby and I are all that matters now. And thankfully, you have no claim to either."
