Chapter 7 - The Lingering Shadow

Just as I thought I had found peace, the past caught up in the form of a legal challenge. An associate of Arthur Vance’s, a man named Marcus Thorne who had escaped the initial net, filed a lawsuit claiming the assets I held in trust were actually his.
It was a blatant attempt to intimidate me, a last-ditch effort to bleed me dry in court.
I didn't panic. I didn't hide. I called Sarah.
"Let him come," I said. "We have the original ledgers. We have the digital signatures. If he wants to see me in court, I’ll be there."
The trial was grueling. Thorne was a shark, but I wasn't the same woman he had once seen at those gala dinners. I stood on the witness stand and recounted every detail of the Vance empire’s corruption. I spoke with a clarity and confidence that left the defense attorney with no room to maneuver.

When I looked at Thorne, I didn't see an imposing figure. I saw another small man trying to hold onto power that didn't belong to him.
